At the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong on Thursday, Sony Computer Entertainment chairman Kaz Hirai was taking center stage along with tech columnist Walter Mossberg. Hirai used to work in the Sony game unit and is now considered by some to be a heartbeat away from the presidency-of Sony, that is.
During his chat with Mossberg, Hirai said that Sony was bringing some Playstation games to the Android platform. He added the company is in talks with some handset manufacturers and as far as a timeframe is concerned, he says it will be announced, "when it's time to go public with it," which doesn't translate into imminently. The idea of a Playstation suite for Android handsets was something that came up at the beginning of this year. Of course, the only devices currently Playstation certified are the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY and the Sony Tablet S. Both are powered by the Android OS.
Mossberg also inquired if Sony is seriously considering buying out joint venture partner Ericsson. Rumors of such a transaction have been floating around the internet recently. While Hirai would not comment on the speculation, he did say that he has Sony's CEO and the joint venture's CEO working together and has them both understanding that Sony Ericsson is an important part of Sony's strategy. When the columnist asked the Sony executive why Sony sold camera sensors to Apple, Mr. Hirai responded by saying that you cannot "define who your competitors are these days. We buy from Samsung, we sell to Samsung."
