A new vulnerability has been discovered by pod2g (an integral member of the Chronic Dev Team who is behind of the Greenpois0n jailbreak tool) that has capability to provide untethered jailbreak on the new iOS 5 firmware and it is expected to work on all iOS devices, such as the iPad 1, iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, and iPod Touch 3G. Well, this is not related to the five s3xploits found by Chronic Dev Team.
pod2g hasn’t provided any ETA’s for the new iOS 5 untethered jailbreak as it requires a lot of time in order to develop an exploit into a complete jailbreak tool, but it is expected to be released after iOS 5.0.1 software update. At the moment, it is still unclear whether the new iOS 5 untethered jailbreak will work on the iPad 2 and the newly released iPhone 4S due to the fact that these iOS devices uses a different hardware – the A5 dual core chip. Additionally, it is still unsure if the bug that was discovered by pod2g exists in iOS 5.0.1 firmware.
As we all know, both iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0wand iH8sn0w’s Sn0wbreeze iPhone / iPad jailbreak tools can only provide tethered jailbreak on iOS 5 firmware, and recently on the new iOS 5.0.1 beta (and probably on the final version of the firmware. Aside from these, Cydia’s BigBoss also released an application called SemiTether that will allows iOS 5 jailbreakers to use their device (but limited features only) without needing to boot the device in tethered jailbreak state using the application’s tethered boot utility. But despite these tethered and SemiTethered jailbreak, nothing beats untethered iOS jailbreak.
Anyway, if you have already updated your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch on iOS 5 and want to get a tethered jailbreak, then you can refer on the tutorial posted below on how to jailbreak iOS 5 using Redsn0w 0.9.9 or with Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta.
Steps to Tethered Jailbreak iOS 5 on iPad using Sn0wbreeze or Redsn0w:
Tethered Jailbreak iPad on iOS 5 Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b5
Tethered Jailbreak iPad on iOS 5 Using Sn0wbreeze 2.8b8
Then after jailbreaking the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch you can now download and install Semi Tether app can be found on this blog post.
