The iOS 5 firmware has been released can be jailbroken using Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze. Unfortunately, Apple’s iBooks is not working on jailbroken iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch running on tethered or semi tethered iOS 5. We are hearing numerous reports from various iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users regarding their turbulent experience, conveniently crashing every time they are trying to launch iBooks on their iOS 5-powered devices. Well, the good news is, a temporary solution / workaround is available to fix this error.According to iH8sn0w – the main man behind Sn0wbreeze iPhone / iPad jailbreak tool – the issue was dealing with how Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze did sandbox patches in the kernel. And for those of you who aren’t aware, sandbox is a security measure that is used to ensure iOS apps such as the Safari mobile browser don’t have access to personal information or system files. Anyway, you can check the tutorial posted below on how to fix iBooks on jailbroken iOS 5 on iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch:
Note: This tutorial requires you to have iFile, a jailbreak app available in Cydia Store under BigBoss repo. It is a paid app, but is very useful and worth every penny.
Steps to fix iBooks on Jailbroken iOS 5
Step 1: First, you will need to uninstall iBooks on your jailbroken iOS device (or use this iTunes link to download iBooks). Make sure you don’t open the app just yet as we are going to apply the fix first.
Step 2: Now you have to launch iFile and the you have to copy iBooks.app from /var/mobile/Applications/(iBook’s folder)/ and paste it to /Applications. You can use SBSettings, or just check every folder to identify the correct iBooks folder. This process is quite if you don’t have much App Store apps installed on your iOS device.
Step 3: After pasting iBooks.app, just simply tap on /Applications/iBooks.app/Info.plist and then select the property list editor. Select the CFBundleIdentifier and then change its file name from com.apple.iBooks to com.apple.iBooksFix.
Step 4: Exit iFile and then Respring your iOS device.
Step 5: Now you have to delete the original iBooks app (the one with the rounded corners) and keep the newly installed square iBooks app.
iBooks on jailbroken iOS 5 is fixed! However, since this is just a temporary fix, there’s no way you will be able to sync your iOS device to iTunes, upload your .epub files, or purchase eBooks.
