Just week after the release of the new iOS 5 firmware, a new security flaw has been discovered that will enable users to access their password protected iPad 2 using their own Smart Cover or a magnet. So how does it work? Well, folks over at 9to5Mac has posted a YouTube video to demonstrate the procedures in order to hack a password protected iPad 2 that runs on the new iOS 5 firmware. You can watch it after the break. You do not gain complete access to the iPad, but hackers could capitalize on this security hole in order to steal your important data, such as your private photos, videos, emails, etc…Well here’s a security flaw in iOS 5 that will quickly get patched: anyone with a magnet (or a Smart Cover) can bypass the iPad 2′s locked passcode screen and access whatever app was previously left open. The passcode bypass was discovered by 9to5mac, who recorded a video demonstrating the security breach (embedded below)
How to Bypass iPad 2 Lock Screen Feature on iOS 5:
Step1: Lock a password protected iPad 2
Step 2: Then hold down Power button and wait until the iPad 2 slider appears across the top
Step 3: the iPad 2’s Smart Cover or if you are just using a magnet, just simply swing a magnet over the side of the screen
Step 4: Then open the Smart Cover or remove the magnet
Step 5: Lastly, tap on Cancel on the bottom of the lock screen
That’s it. You have already bypassed the iPad 2 lock screen feature of the new iOS firmware. Although some of the things you can do after bypassing the lockscreen are limited, but the biggest security threat is when you left an app with a sensitive data running on your device and the hacker will be able to get in and delete apps or use the last app you had open. Aside from that, the hacker will also be able to search the spotlight.
How to Protect iPad 2 from Lock Screen iOS 5 Bypass?
Well, because of the new iOS 5 security flaw, it is widely expected that the Cupertino, California-based Apple will release an OTA (over the air) software update (iOS 5.1?) within the next weeks in order to patch this security hole. But, while waiting for the software update, it is advisable for all iPad 2 users who have already updated to iOS 5 whould disable the Smart Cover unlocking feature of their device. To do that, all you have to do is lunch Setting.app from the springboard of your device and then go to General and look for Smart Cover unlocking and turn it OFF.
