Google Puts Nexus S Android Ice Cream Sandwich Update On Hold

Just four short days after the Nexus S began getting an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a post from a Google employee on the company's official Mobile Help Forum mentions that the update has been halted in some areas. In response to users reporting that nothing happens on their Nexus S after getting notified of the OTA and trying to install it, Google's Paul Wilcox has said that the issue is probably the result of the update being paused in that area. Wilcox adds that the pause is meant to help Google monitor feedback on the update and that users running into the aforementioned problem will receive another notification once the update goes live again in that region. The full statement:

"If you received an update notification a little while ago but the update isn't currently available for your phone, this is likely the result of Google pausing the update in your area while we monitor feedback. The Android 4.0 update is continuing to roll out around the world so your phone will receive another update notification when it's available again in your region."

So what's with the hold? We've yet to hear an official word from Google, but sources speaking with The Verge suggest that this pause is normal and is used to ensure that the roll out is going swimmingly. Some users are reportedly experiencing pretty poor battery life on their Nexus S after installing the update, so it's been suggested that that may be something that Google's looking into. Google Q3 report shows record earnings, but doesn't talk Android

Google held its earnings call for Q3 2011 today and the numbers are looking good for the company. On the purely financial side of things, Google is reporting record earnings. Year-on-year revenue was up 33% for Q3 clocking in at a whopping $9.72 billion, which beat the estimates by almost $1 billion.

Unfortunately, there was nothing about Android or mobile revenue in the earnings call. The call broke down revenue generated from Google sites and the AdSense network, but did not cover specifics on AdMob revenue, or Android Market revenue. It is possible that Google is saving this information as an homage to Steve Jobs, and it will be part of the announcement for Ice Cream Sandwich and the Nexus Prime, but we'll have to wait and see on that.

The Next Web attempted to do some "back of the napkin" math to approximate a number for total Android devices in the wild, but ended up assuming about 575,000 daily activations this quarter. Even the conservative estimates that we've seen have Android activating more devices per day than that, not to mention the more aggressive estimates which would have had Android activating at least 750,000 devices per day in Q3.

We're hoping we see a better breakdown of mobile next week at the ICS event, but regardless, Google had a great quarter, and the company stock has jumped 35.61 points (6.37%) in after hours trading since the earnings call was made.

Google Nexus Prime Event Confirmed For 19th October

We heard a rumor that Samsung and Google would hold their Google Nexus Prime or Samsung Galaxy Nexus event on the 19th of October at 10 am in Hong Kong, which would make it 6PM in the US on the 18th of October, they ill also be unveiling Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The event has now been confirmed and we will get our first official look at the new Google Nexus Prime or Samsung Galaxy Nexus next week, and we have already heard some of the new devices specifications.

The Google Nexus Prime will come with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, plus a 4.65 inch Super AMOLED HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, and the display is said to feature curved glass. Other specifications on the Google Nexus Prime include a TI OMAP 4460 dual core Cortex A9 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of built in storage and a microSD card slot.

The Google Nexus Prime will also come with the advanced 5 megapixel camera that we heard about previously and the camera will be capable of recording Full HD video in 1080p.

There will also be a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera, and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will also feature LTE/HSPA support, NFC, plus 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth, plus it will come with a 1,750 mAh battery.

Are Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Nexus Prime delayed due to an Apple patent dispute?

Now, here’s a possibility presented by Russian analyst Eldar Murtazin - Samsung and Google didn’t postpone their October 11th event because of Steve Jobs, but they rather did so because of the patent war with Apple. More so, Android Ice Cream Sandwich and the Samsung Nexus Prime are now “under question” and Google is actively removing features, which could have something to do with Apple patents. And finally, the search giant itself doesn’t have an exact timeline for all of this, so the rumored October 27th Samsung event might not be for ICS or the Nexus Prime, or might be pushed even further.

Long-time Nokia insider Eldar Murtazin has a mixed track record when speaking about Apple. Should you trust it? Possibly, but Murtazin doesn’t even hint at what is the source of the information, so we’d take it with a grain of salt.

Initially, Apple sued Samsung for “slavishly copying” its products. The lawsuit was filed about handsets, but the software Samsung employs was also touched on as in its TouchWiz Android skin Samsung has allegedly also copied Apple down to minor details like the angle at which the phone handle on the phone app is pictured.
