Symbian still the most widespread mobile OS in 2011, Apple surges with the iPhone 4S
StatCounter has released its January-December 2011 data, and the results come as no surprise to someone who follows with unbiased eye the world's smartphone market. Symbian, it turns out, is still the most popular mobile OS worldwide, installed on 33.46% of devices, while iOS surged to second place, according to StatCounter, thanks to the breathtaking sales of the iPhone 4S at the end of the year.
The data is sourced worldwide, so probably the unabashed lead of Android and iOS new phone sales in the West, especially the United States, has been offset somewhat by existing phones in Africa and Asia, where Nokia traditionally carries a quite significant footprint.
Nokia has renamed Symbian as simply Nokia Belle for its upcoming handsets, as well as the February update of the existing ones, like the Nokia N8, and said it will support it until at least 2016.
Rumors are that Nokia 803 - a Nokia N8 successor with optical zoom will be running Symbian as well, since the more modern Windows Phone has to introduce some additional functions in the camera interface to support a sophisticated sensor like the one expected on the camera-centric Nokia N8 heir, rumored to run Nokia Donna with dual-core support.
