Microsoft have confirmed that their engineers are aware of the SMS flaw in Windows Phone 7.5 and are in the process of examining, presumably in preparation of producing a update which will rectify the issue. In a statement made to technology website The Verge Microsoft's Greg Sullivan confirmed that the company were aware of the issue and were investigating it.
"We are aware of the issue and our engineering teams are examining it now. Once we have more details, we will take appropriate action to help ensure customers are protected."
We can only presume that 'appropriate action' will translate into an update for the operating system that has, until now, suffered from very few problems. The flaw is particularly serious as it allows the attacker to simply send a text to the device which can then completely disables the phone's SMS functions locking you out of the messaging app. First to be alerted to its existence WinRumours proceeded to test out the bug on a number of devices such as the HTC Titan and Samsung Focus Flash to see if it was a problem that affected all Windows Phone 7 handsets.
They found that not only does it affect any handset running Windows Phone 7 Mango but that it can also be triggered if a person sends the user a certain message on Facebook as the Facebook live tile then locks up and shuts down the phone. At present there is only one known fix for the bug which is to hard reset the phone, essentially wiping all information off the handset.
