Android 5.0 Jelly Bean Coming In Q3?

With Ice Cream Sandwich being introduced to the world during the Google I/O event in may 2011, then officially launched in October, it seems like we really haven’t had enough time to get to know the 4.0 version of the OS. Although Android 4.0 has officially been available for over five months, statistics show that not even two percent of Android devices in existence are running Ice Cream Sandwich. The latest data released by Google shows that a meager 1.6% of devices have ICS installed, with those users becoming fragmented due to the varying point releases of version 4.0 they are running.

While the Android owning population waits patiently for the announcement that the manufacturers of their device are about to launch the ICS update, Google are said to be putting the final touches onto the next major release of Android in an attempt make Q3 of 2012 a viable release point. The report comes from the hit and miss rumor site DigiTimes, who have cited industry-based sources on this one, but have a varying success rate when it comes to claims such as these.

The current version of Android offers probably the most notable upgrades to date, with features such as facial recognition, widget re-sizing and a new powerful voice input engine; but has been extremely slow to gather pace in the industry. Companies such as HTC have announced the the HTC  One X, One S and One V which will be their first three Android 4.0 handsets, with others such as Sony about to release two smartphones initially running Android Gingerbread but benefitting from almost immediate ICS updates.

If the unnamed source is accurate, then those devices could almost immediately be running an out of date version of Android. Android 5.0 Jelly Bean was previously speculated to be coming at some point during Q2 of this year, but it looks as though that could be temporarily delayed by the company in favor of a slightly later launch. Android 5.0 looks all set to bring updated and improved support for those users who prefer their Android experience to be via a tablet device, but as DigiTimes sources have stated "The rapid shift of OS may not be healthy for the development of the Android Ecosystem" and could create a trend of Android users being consistently one step behind the official current version of the OS.

ASUS May Be One Of The First To Get Android 5.0, Confirms Jelly Bean Name

Asus has confirmed that the name of Android 5.0 as being Jelly Bean and hinted that it might be the first one to ship a device based on the follow-up to Ice Cream Sandwich. Google had bowls of Jelly Beans spread all its meeting rooms at the company's booth at Mobile World Congress.

The company was the first to produce a tablet with Honeycomb (the first Asus Eee Pad Transformer) and the first to get Ice Cream Sandwich on a tablet (Asus Transformer Prime). Details about Android Jelly Bean have been scarce; rumours have indicated that Jelly Bean could have a dockable desktop mode, not unlike Ubuntu for Android and that it would come in the second quarter of 2012, just in time for Google's I/O developer conference.

Ice Cream Sandwich has yet to make a significant impact on the market yet although most device manufacturers (HTC, Motorola, Sony, LG and Samsung) have announced windows when they expect ICS to be rolled out.

Dolphin Android Browser Now Equipped With Voice Control

MoboTap the developers of the popular alliterative mobile browser Dolphin, have rolled out a new update to their Dolphin Browser on Android, which brings with it a number of great new features as well as voice-control. The new voice control features called Dolphin Sonar enables users to use their voice to carry out searches, share, bookmark, navigate and more.

The Dolphin Sonar speech recognition feature is available for free in the Android Market via the new 7.4 update. Which also brings with it an improvement in browser speeds, as well as additional add-ons for the browser. Yongzhi Yang, CEO of, MoboTap explains:

“Our gesture-based browsing function was a game-changer in terms of the way people browse on their mobile devices, and Sonar is the logical next step,” – “Just as sonar is used by dolphins to navigate, Dolphin Sonar interprets sound to get you where you want to be online.” Dolphin Sonar for iOS devices will be arriving sometime in the summer of 2012.

Google may launch Android controlled home entertainment system

This one actually could be far bigger news than it first would seem. The news has come out that Google may be looking to launch an Android controlled home entertainment system later this year. The interesting part of it is that the hardware is said to be Google branded. As yet, Google has never released branded hardware without a partner, like the HTC Nexus One, Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, and Motorola XOOM.

The report by the Wall Street Journal says that Google is planning to design and market the home entertainment system, and there is no mention of any hardware partners. The idea behind the entertainment system is similar to the Android@Home project that Google showed off at last year's Google I/O. The home entertainment system has been developed by the Android team, and will run a variant of the mobile OS software. It will allow users to stream music from any device over a wireless network.

It is highly likely that such a system would see pretty tight integration with Google Music, Android and Google TV (which is itself a variant of Android). The real question is whether or not Google is really planning to build the hardware itself. Even the acquisition of Motorola Mobility wouldn't really help with this as the company has no history of building audio equipment bigger than headphones.
