HTC Rezound is a "secret" global phone?

Some enterprising HTC Rezound owners at the XDA Developers forums have discovered that by putting a GSM SIM card in the Rezound that you get more network options to choose from. Switching will reportedly allow owners to place and receive calls on GSM networks, although the phone often resets itself. In some cases they are reporting data access over GSM networks as well, although SMS is generally reported to not be working.

It’s important to note that the FCC did not note or test any GSM radio or antenna in the Rezound, so something fishy is going on here. Yet it seems that too many people have confirmed using the GSM radio for it to be an elaborate hoax, and the Qualcomm MSM8660 SoC does include the silicon for a GSM radio.

Our best guess is that HTC/Verizon simply planned to not have the radio turned on, but some code somewhere wasn’t fully pulled out and is getting accessed when a GSM SIM is inserted. The reports of missing data, lack of SMS, and struggles with the software switching the phone back to CDMA mode would seem to confirm that the Rezound’s software is “conflicted” about the situation.

Is it possible that Verizon could decide to turn such a feature on later? Probably not without getting FCC approval again. Perhaps some enterprising developers will figure out a way to more consistently unlock the latent radios inside. But all of this begs a larger question: Why aren’t more phones shipped with global radios working?

The short answer of course, is money.

U.S. carriers want to sell you a phone that’s locked to their network, and prefer for global roaming to be a special feature of a couple of premium phones (and if you happen to rack up a huge global roaming charge, so much the better).

But this practice is inherently anti-consumer. Carriers already get two-year contracts when customers purchase a subsidized phone (which practically all U.S. customers do), isn’t that enough lock in? Why are they shipping phones that cripple basic features that any customer needs when traveling?

So perhaps the bigger question here isn’t “what’s going on with the Rezound?” but instead, “why is any phone shipped without all of its radios enabled?”

New ad for HTC Rezound features Machine Gun Kelly, Beats Audio and those red earbuds

New ad for HTC Rezound features Machine Gun Kelly, Beats Audio and those red earbuds
The HTC Rezound is expected to launch from Verizon on November 14th for $299.99 with a signed 2-year pact. The device is a Beats Audio branded model which means it includes those fancy red earbuds, a Beats Audio sound profile and a nice logo design on the back of the phone. With Friday's launch of the sexy, sleek Motorola DROID RAZR and the upcoming launch of the Android 4.0 powered Samsung GALAXY Nexus, Verizon decided to run an ad focusing on the Beats Audio features of the phone in order to differentiate the model and give it some exposure, which seems hard when you are going up against two heavyweights like the DROID RAZR and the GALAXY Nexus..

You can click on the video below to check out the ad, which shows a typical wannabe playa listening to Machine Gun Kelly as he walks through the streets of the metropolis, oblivious to the slow-motion activity Inception-style going on around him including flying manholes, and a truck flipping over. Of course, what this all has to do with the actual performance of the phone, who knows. Does the ad let you know that this will probably be the first smartphone in the U.S. to be launched with a 720p display? No, it doesn't. Yet, the ad does serve its purpose somewhat as by the time the spot is over, you certainly realize that you won't forget the HTC Rezound name and the fact that it is a Beats Audio device.

HTC Rezound displayed on Verizon in-store ad

The HTC Rezound, formerly known as the HTC Vigor, has not yet been introduced by Verizon and HTC although we now expect the model to be introduced at a NYC event on November 3rd. And to show us that we are closing in on the unveiling of the device, Verizon has put up in some stores a display that includes the HTC Beats branded model along with a pair of other LTE enabled smartphones offered by the carrier.

This new poster, apparently back-lit and quite visible, shows off the LG Revolution, the Motorola DROID BIONIC and yes, the HTC Rezound. The picture of the device includes red soft keys, the Beats by Dre earphones that come in the box, and a picture of Joe Jonas on the phone's display. The last word we have on a potential launch date is November 10th based on the MAP list that leaked out a couple of weeks ago. On that date, speculation is that Verizon will also release the Motorola DROID RAZR and the Samsung GALAXY Nexus besides the HTC Rezound.

The HTC Rezound is expected to come to market with a 4.3 inch screen with 720p resolution and a dual-core 1.5GHz processor under the hood. 1GB of RAM should be on board and the phone is thought to have an 8MP camera on back and a front-facing 2MP shooter. The former captures 1080p HD video and Android 2.3.4 should be pre-installed. With Verizon pricing its other new LTE enabled phones at $299.99 with a signed 2-year contract, we would be surprised to see anything else on the phone's price tag, especially since it features the Beats audio technology and those cool earphones.

HTC Rezound (Vigor) Press Shot Leaked

We have been hearing about the HTC Rezound (HTC Vigor) for quite a while now, we have already seen some leaked photos of the device and now we have a leaked press shot of the HTC Rezound in an official HTC case.

The press shot below clearly shows of the new HTC Rezound which we were expecting to be announced earlier this month and it is rumored to come with a 4.3 inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Other rumored specifications on the HTC Rezound include a dual core 1.5GHz processor, plus an 8 megapixel camera and a front facing 2 megapixel camera, it is rumored to come with 1GB of RAM and Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, plus HTC’s Sense 3.5 UI.

HTC Rezound shows up in Verizon's database, LTE and global roaming support confirmed:

HTC Rezound leaks in a press photo with an HTC case

HTC Rezound leaks in a press photo with an HTC case
Even though we haven’t seen the official press photos for the upcoming HTC Rezound, a different type of press photo has leaked of the powerful Android handset that shows it off wearing an HTC branded case.

For the past couple of months we have come to know the device formerly known as the HTC Vigor quite well. We have seen it in unofficial photos, videos, renders and more. Although the smartphone is expected to be launched on November 10 on Verizon Wireless along with the Motorola DROID RAZR and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus it still hasn’t been officially introduced.

The HTC Rezound is going to be quite the beast of a smartphone. Although it will not have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when it launches it will still boast some pretty enticing specs. It is an Android 2.3.4 device that is blessed with the latest version of HTC’s Sense user interface. It will be one of the latest devices to run on the ultra fast 4G LTE network. The Rezound has a 4.3-inch display that is expected to have a 720p resolution. Fueling the handset is a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. Of course it has a pair of cameras; an 8 megapixel shooter on the back that can record video in full 1080p HD and a front-facing 2 megapixel shooter.

The two press shots that are meant to show off the HTC case at least reassure us that the HTC Rezound is what we thought it was. The colors of the case itself may not be for everybody but odds are there will be a bunch of options if this is to be HTC’s flagship device on Verizon for a while. The DROID RAZR and the Galaxy Nexus have already been announced so it should only be a matter of time until the HTC Rezound becomes official. All signs are pointing to a November 10 launch so keep your eyes peeled for when the news becomes official.
