BlackBerry App World applications more profitable than Android apps

Here’s another shocker from BlackBerry’s DevCon event in Amsterdam - RIM execs brought clarity about the BlackBerry App world saying apps on it are actually more profitable than their counterparts in the Android Market.

Newly appointed man-in-charge Thorsten Heins said that the App World is now home to over 60,000 applications. While that’s a mere fraction of the hundreds of thousands on the App Store or the Android Market, Heins said that BlackBerry developers could profit more from their apps than Android programmers. Apps on the App World allegedly bring 40% more profits than Android apps, and an impressive 13% of developers for the platform have cashed in over $100,000 from apps. There are 174 million app downloads each month, equalling 6 million downloaded apps a day, according to The Verge. This brings the total to 30 applications downloaded by each user, which is quite impressive actually.

Finally, Heins added that the BlackBerry PlayBook OS now supports Qt, which is an interesting move that can attract disillusioned Symbian developers.

RIM’s co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have been at the helm of RIM for nearly twenty years, but as the company loses consumer interest to Apple’s iOS and Android, investors pushed for a change and change has happened: the CEO duet has resigned in favor of ex-COO Thorsten Heins.

Heins has spoken of little drastic change, but one interesting thing he confirmed is that the upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices and the PlayBook 2.0 will come with an Android app player pre-loaded. This means that you’ll have the opportunity to run Android apps out of the box on BB10 devices this fall, which sounds awesome.

"Playbook 2.0 and BlackBerry 10 will also have an Android player on it," Heins said.

The new head of RIM also said he was confident about the new QNX-based platform, and the upcoming devices. Interestingly, it seemed that the new CEO thought RIM’s biggest shortcoming was in communication, and that’s why he’s planning on hiring a new marketing head. Do you agree with that? Ford set to showcase MyFord Mobile app at CES

A few months has passed since Ford opened up pre-orders for its upcoming electric Focus release. Next week at CES, Ford is scheduled to demo the companion for the electric Focus, the new MyFord Mobile app.

The app will allow Focus Electric owners to monitor battery life, estimate driving distance on the current charge, search for nearby locations, optimize charging times, monitor their impact on the environment, and even share their stats via social media outlets.

"The MyFord Mobile app and the Focus Electric work together to coach drivers to be more efficient and maximize the benefits of the electric vehicle experience," said Kelly Zechel, MyFord Mobile product manager. "We wanted to help drivers get more miles out of every charge and have some fun along the way."
