AT&T sees "tremendous demand" for free Apple iPhone 3GS

If you are curious to know which device AT&T chairman Ralph de la Vega considers responsible for most of the new subscribers that have signed up with the carrier recently, it is the Apple iPhone 3GS. The executive says that AT&T is seeing "tremendous demand" for the phone which is free with a signed two-year contract. The device was originally launched in June 2009 and de la Vega says, "we’re getting more new subscribers coming on to the 3GS on the average than other devices. So we have an inventory sold out on that device."

While the Apple iPhone 3GS is the first of Apple's touchscreen handsets to be offered for free with a 2-year pact, you can also buy an 8GB version of the Apple iPhone 4 for $99 with a signed 2-year contract. As far as the brand new Apple iPhone 4S is concerned, sales are continuing to do very well and de la Vega says he is very optimistic about smartphone growth for AT&T's fourth quarter.

AT&T Activates One Million iPhone 4S Handsets

US mobile carrier AT&T has just announced that they have now activated more than one million iPhone 4S handsets since the iPhone 4S went on sale last Friday to Tuesday this week, and we also heard from Apple recently that they had sold more than 4 million iPhone 4S devices in the first three days.

“It’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for the iPhone 4S and they want it to run on a network that lets them download twice as fast as competitors’,” said Ralph de la Vega, President and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. It will be interesting to see what sort of numbers both Verizon and Sprint post for the iPhone 4S, and whether either company has activated as many devices as AT&T.

Apple Shows Off iPhone 4S Siri In New TV Ad

When Apple announced the new iPhone 4S, one of the major new features it announced for the device was its new voice activated assistant, Siri, and now Apple has released a new TV advert featuring Siri.

The video below shows Siri in action, although it seems to work perfectly in the TV advert, something that we haven’t found so far whilst testing it out. Apple also announced Siri was still in Beta when they showed it off at the iPhone 4S, and whilst it is a cool feature it definitely needs some work, especially for users outside the US.

Apple iPhone 4S visits another chop shop, $188 Bill of Materials estimated

After we had an analyst to set the 16GB iPhone 4S in the $170 ballpark, now a teardown by the guys from IHS iSupply nail the preliminary Bill of Materials to be $188. If we count the other costs involved in getting the handset to your doorstep the price will go up a bit, but not by much, since Apple's state-of-the-art operations have been polished by CEO Tim Cook over the years to perfection.

Not bad for a phone that will sell in droves for $600+ ASP, and another tribute for Apple's marketing and supply chain genius. The 16GB iPhone 4 last year was estimated to cost $187.5 last year by the same chop shop. The 32GB and 64GB versions of the iPhone 4S are pegged at $207 and $245, respectively, again a far cry from the retail difference Apple commands.

Apple's Chief Financial Officer Pete Oppenheimer has been debunking these teardowns last year, claiming that there are more components and costs involved that never make it into the reports, so make of Apple's $86 billion cash pile what you will. The internal memory chip in the unit iSupply had was produced by Hynix, whereas Samsung and Toshiba were the main suppliers until now. The dual-core A5 chip, however, is Samsung's production, they noted.

The biggest mystery so far is the exact supplier of the 8MP camera module, estimated to cost $17.60 wholesale. We've seen rumors that it has been split between OmniVision and Sony, with Sony's sensor picking up the slack until OV ramps up production of its own creation. Largan Precision is said to be the maker of the lens, so the whole thing could be one OmniVision/Sony/Largan cooperation, at least for the first batches.

iPhone 4S Is Now Reservation Only At Apple Stores

It looks like Apple’s iPhone 4S is still extremely popular, even after Apple managed to sell over 4 million iPhone 4S devices in the first three days, it would appear that demand for their latest iPhone is still high.

Apple has now updated its how to buy page on its website, and the iPhone 4S is now only available from Apple retail stores if you have reserved one online, obviously due to the huge demand for the device. iPhone 4S is available in store by reservation only. Reserve yours after 9:00 p.m. tonight for pickup tomorrow. When you come in, you’ll choose a carrier and plan, and we’ll get your iPhone up and running before you leave the store. According to the guys over at Mac Rumors, Apple are still selling the iPhone 4S to walk in customers, although it isn’t clear how long this will last, as there are no details as yet on what stocks of the iPhone 4S Apple has left in their retail stores.
