Apple’s iPhone Tops Customer Satisfaction Survey

Apple once again topped the J.D. Power customer satisfaction survey with a satisfaction score of 839 out of 1,000. The survey measures satisfaction with performance, ease of operation, features, and physical design. HTC took second place with a score of 798, Samsung followed closely behind with a score of 769, and Motorola a score of 758. The industry average score is 774. Apple was the only manufacturer who earned a 5 Power Circle Rating. HTC came close with four circles, and the remaining manufacturers managed 3 circles.

The biggest gripe consumers have with manufacturers and their devices? Battery life. According to the survey, battery life (lack there of) is the single worst aspect of owning a smartphone. As a result, owners satisfied with their device's battery life are likely to rate the manufacturer higher and purchase the same brand again.

As a result, power hungry 4G phones often come with higher rates of dissatisfaction. The shorter lifespans of 4G device batteries is only exacerbated by the increased time 4G phone users spend on their devices, thereby killing the phones quicker.

The balance between speed, battery life, and a happy customer is something many manufacturers are struggling with. Apple thus far has side-stepped the issue by not implementing 4G in their handsets. With the release of the new iPad Apple has finally entered the 4G LTE fray, but reports indicate battery life hasn’t taken a noticeable hit. However, to achieve this Apple included a battery nearly 70% larger than that found in the iPad 2. Apple, has a unique advantage in respects to optimizing their products as well.

With all the advancements in mobile display, processor, and graphics technology, battery advancements have seen little progress. Something new needs to emerge, otherwise manufacturers will be forced to scale-back their devices capabilities, or release crazy powerful devices with horrible battery lives.

Baseonelabs GunnerCase For iPhone 4, Inspired By Shotgun Recoil Pads

The Baseonelabs GunnerCase designed for Apple’s iPhone 4, may look like a standard simplistic case. But underneath that plain exterior lies technology to help keep your iPhone 4 safe from even the hard knocks, drops and bumps.

The Baseonelabs GunnerCase has been inspired by the recoil pads found on shotguns. So when you unfortunately drop your iPhone the sidewalls of the GunnerCase are designed to collapse and distribute the force of the impact, protecting your iPhone from damage.

The Baseonelabs GunnerCase construction creates Air Cell pockets inspired by the shotguns and rifles pads providing it with a protective cell around your phone. The GunnerCase is only 13.9mm thick making it one of the thinnest protective cases available for the iPhone 4 and 4S.

The Baseonelabs GunnerCase is now available to purchase for around $40, and its design and construction material is designed to repel lint, helping you keep it looking good.

Apple Siri Gets Updated, Further Yelp Integration

Apple doesn’t release any information when its voice activated virtual assistant, Siri, gets an update, but it would appear that Siri has recently been updated with some new features. According to the guys over at Gadgetsteria, the latest update seems to have come around the time Apple released iOS 5.1, which was last week. The latest version of Siri on the iPhone now comes with further Yelp integration, and this was recently confirmed by Yelp over on their blog.

Well, last week, Apple launched iOS 5.1 and with it, an updated Siri and Yelp integration on iPhone. Now when searching for a recommendation on local businesses, Siri will return Yelp-reviewed businesses and when you tap the star rating (BOOM!) you are immediately taken to the Yelp business profile page. Oh, the places you’ll go… now that you’ll have faster access to Yelp review highlights, quick tips, hours of operation, address, phone number, photos — the list goes on.

Internal HDD iPhone Case

This case has been designed to resemble a 100GB PC ATA/IDE hard drive right down to the connectors. If not been made clear is the case is compatible with the iPhone 4S a well. But with the large cutout on the side, the 4S should fit without any problems.

This hilarious iPhone 4 case will guarantee that you win any dorkathon you choose to enter. The plastic case — which covers the back and sides of the phone — is shaped like a raw hard drive, complete with vendor sticker, fake screws and even SATA connectors.

It would probably work just as well as a sticker, but this case obviously offers extra protection, too. The design is almost ridiculously authentic, betrayed only by the little hole through which the iPhone’s camera can peek. I see this going one of two ways. If you are spotted by another nerd, they’ll love it. But if some normal person spies your case, they will probably assume that the back fell off your iPhone.

If you wan’t one, you’ll have to go on a search of your local novelty stores. The UK-based supplier, Thumbs-Up World, doesn’t sell direct. Instead, it appears these things are sold through high street stores, in the UK at least.

iPhone With 4G LTE Confirmed By iOS 5.1

We have been hearing rumors for quite some time that Apple is working on a 4G LTE iPhone, and with the recent release of the iPad which comes with 4G LTE we are expecting the next iPhone to support 4G. Now according to a recent report by the guys over at iDownloadBlog, references to a 4G enabled iPhone have been discovered in iOS 5.1, which you can see in the video below.

The references to 4G for the iPhone were apparently not present in the previous build of iOS, which was version 5.0.1, and they have only been added in iOS 5.1. With apple launching a 4G LTE enabled iPad, we suspect we will see a 4G LTE enabled iPhone later this year, considering that the reason Apple didn’t release one previous was due to battery drain by LTE, but that seems to have been dealt with on the new iPad.

Roland Unveils Its New Wireless Connect Apps And Hardware

Roland has this week introduced a new addition to their range of products called the Roland Wireless Connect, which consists of a USB adapter and two new iOS apps. Roland Wireless Connect has been designed to allow users to enjoy their instruments on iOS devices. The first new application from Roland is the Air Recorder, which enables you to record from a Roland synthesiser or V-Accordion directly to your Apple iPhone. Tracks can also be played on your iPhone and sent directly to the instrument, enabling you to jam along and record the result back in the Air Recorder application.

To make the connection to the Roland instruments a USB adapter WNA1100-RL manufactured by Netgear has been used, that plugs into a USB port on your Roland instrument, allowing your iPhone and instrument to communicate via your wireless network.

The second of the new applications is called V-Drums Friend Jam for iPhone, and is an iOS version V-Drums Friend Jam, the popular drum practice software. While the Mac/Windows version of V-Drums Friend Jam requires a USB or MIDI connection from a V-Drums sound module to a computer, Roland Wireless Connect provides a direct, convenient connection from the module to the iPhone. The app allows V-Drums users across the globe to interact with each other while improving their drumming skills with play-along audio songs and practice evaluation features.

SugarSync 3.0 iOS App Arrives

SugarSync announced an update to the company’s iPad app, jumping up to SugarSync 3.0 and bringing a collection of new features to justify the big bump.

Of course the new SugarSync app (iTunes) is optimized for the iPad display, thanks to an all out to re-write of the new app from scratch with features that take advantage of the large iPad display. The new SugarSync iPad app has a very nice looking interface that now relies on gestures like drag, swipe and more to make it easier to manage files stored in the cloud service.

Another cool new feature is the ability to see the contents of multiple folders at once. As you can see in the screenshot below, this allows you to see which folders you are browsing in, much like the accordion view on OS X’s finder. You’ll also find easier access to backup options that allow you to backup photos or videos to any folder on your computer. Sure, you have iCloud and PhotoStream, but it’s nice to have this extra ability to backup specific media files to your computer.

SugarSync is a free cloud storage service with 5GB of free storage for every user who signs up. The service offers more control about what syncs to each of your devices than Dropbox, which makes the larger storage plans attractive. SugarSync also allows you to share large files easily, and it doesn’t count the files you share against your co-worker or friend’s storage like many competitors do.

What is SugarSync?:

InstaGamer is a curious little app — half game, half companion app, it's basically Concentration with a little twist: you discover new Instagram images while you play. Before starting, you define a search term, featured feed, or photos from your own or friends' albums, and they're then placed face-down and the game begins. It's a pretty simple concept, but certainly good fun and a nice way to discover new content. The app is available now as a free download from the App Store.

A new iOS application has been created called InstaGamer which is a small Instagram companion application, that provides you with a game to discover new content on Instagram. InstaGamer has both a single and double player mode. To start game simply select a search term featured feed, or photos from either your or your friends Instagram photo album. Then to start playing simply place the images face down and your are away. Guitar iPhone 4/4S Case

Owners of Apple’s iPhone 4 or 4S smartphone who are looking for something a little more original to protect their beloved device. Might be interested in a hard case that is currently available over on the Etsy website, which will transform the back of your iPhone to look like a Fender guitar.

The case is made from hard clear plastic and the printing is covered with a high gloss glass like coating that protects the graphics and artwork from fading and wear and tear. The iPhone 4/4S Fender Guitar case is now available over on the Etsy website for $19.99 and has been created by stickitskins.

This is one of the slickest iPhone 4 videos we have seen in a long time. A guitarist (justkylevids on YouTube) apparently wondered what it was like being inside his guitar while playing, so he dropped his iPhone 4 in with the video camera running and captured this incredible video. The effect you see is mesmerizing, but not really representative of the way that guitar strings actually oscillate. Instead, it's another example of how the iPhone 4's rolling shutter can create some interesting photos and video. Still, it's fun to watch.

iPhone Latch & Lanyard, Supports Your iPhone While Capturing Movies And Photos

A new iPhone Latch & Lanyard concept designed to be used with the Gymbl Case is currently over on the Kickstarter website looking to make the jump from concept to production, and has been designed to help you take iPhone photographs with ease. We have featured a number of different solutions here on Geeky Gadgets that have been designed to aid stability and help you hold and control your iPhone movement when taking photographs. But none have been as small or as convenient as the iPhone Latch & Lanyard concept. Watch the video after the jump to see it in action. Gordon Fowler explains a little more about his concept.

“Held taut against your neck, the iPhone is steady when taking photos and when capturing video you can hold it steady or swing it through a smooth and graceful arc. You will be surprised by how much of a difference it makes. It’s also amazing how natural and secure it feels to do this with one thumb steadying the camera while the other is over the shutter and adjusting the settings. It works both left- and right-handed and in portrait as well as landscape mode.”

The iPhone Latch & Lanyard concept is now looking to raise $20,000 to help get the concept into production, so if you think its something you would use make a pledge for $15 to make sure you have one once it goes into production at the special Kickstarter introductory offer price.

iPUP iPhone Credit Card Case

There are a number of different case designs currently available on the market for the iPhone, that also enable you to easily carry your credit cards. But this new innovative case designed by Yun Seong Kim. Provides a simple yet innovative solution for carrying both your iPhone 4/4S and a credit card. For those purchases you need to make that can’t be bought using the new NFC technology.

The iPUP has been design to provide a save method of carrying your credit card without the need for a wallet to purse. Using a slot on the back of the iPhone case into which you can slide your credit card. Keeping it secure, yet not damaging the card’s security strip.

The iPUP is constructed from UV-Coated PET film so the smooth surface will help protect your credit cards magnetic strip. Unfortunately the iPUP iPhone credit card case is still only a concept at the moment, but will hopefully find its way into production through the likes of Kickstarter and similar websites.

iLoop Smartphone Holder

Futulele Transforms Your iPad And iPhone Into A Digital Ukulele

We have featured a number of different devices here on Geeky Gadgets that use Apple devices to create guitars and instruments. But an innovative instrument called the Futulele, now use both an iPad and iPhone to create a digital version of the classic Ukulele. The Futulele has been designed as an iPad application which can be used on its own with on just one iPad. But a case is also available which then combines both iOS devices together. Watch the video after the jump to see the Futulele is action.

Once combined into the Futulele case the iPad tablet is used to strum while the iPhone is used to select the chords required. The Futulele has been created by Amidio and is at the moment just a prototype concept.

The Futulele can be used to create up to 12 chords for each song and enables you to change chord sets on the fly if required. Amidio is now looking for assistance from a manufacturer to help the Futulele make the jump from concept to production. To tell the truth, the device composition looks so obvious that we’re wondering why no-one has thought of this before, but still – this is a completely new way of producing music with iOS devices.

Introducing Futulele, the Ukulele app for the iPad and the iPhone:
