Sony’s Quad Core Smartphones Not Coming Until 2013?

A number of manufacturers showed off quad core smartphones at this years Mobile World Congress, Sony didn’t show off any new quad core devices and now it appears that we may have to wait until 2013 to see quad core smartphones from Sony.

Cnet Asia recently spoke to Stephen Sneeden, who is the product marketing manager for Sony Mobile, and he indicated that Sony wont release any quad core smartphones until next year. We’re going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the battery efficiency. Because right now we don’t feel that is there. What we are going to be doing in the second-half of the year is moving to the Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core architecture.

You’ll see in 2013, as we’re evaluating the quad-core performance where it makes sense, where you’re not suffering in quality and the performance truly is there, and there really is something that demanding applications need. That’s when we make the right move to quad-core. Sony recently announced a range of new dual core smartphones so it looks like we may have to wait until next year to see some quad core ones from the company.

Sony Xperia S Fast Charging Feature Detailed

We recently heard that Sony’s latest Android smartphone, the Sony Xperia S would come with a fast charging feature, although at the time we didn’t have any information on how this would work. We now have some details on how the fast charge feature on the new Sony Xperia S will work, you will be able to plug your device in for 10 minutes and this will give you one hour of talk time on the Xperia S.

The Sony Xperia S will be able to charge your phone to 80 percent power in just 30 minutes, which sounds pretty impressive, after the 80 percent power is reached, the rate at which the device charges slows down. When the battery reaches 80 percent, the rapid charging is switched to standard charging, this is done so that the life of the battery is preserved and it charges as the slower rate until it reaches 100 percent.

An 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes does sound impressive, it will be interesting to see how the rapid charging works on the device and also what the battery is like in day to day usage.

Sony Xperia Sony Nypon LT22i To Be Called Sony Xperia P?

Sony has already announced the Sony Xperia S, and we have seen some details on the Sony Xperia U, now it looks like the Sony LT22i Nypon that we saw a while back will be called the Sony Xperia P. The device will apparently look very similar to the Sony Xperia S, although it will be based on the NovaThor U8500 chipset, and the device is also expect to feature a qHD display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels.

It will also come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, unfortunately those are the only details we have at the moment, although we can expect the full specifications when the device is announced at MWC 2012.

First we saw the Sony Ericsson LT26i "Nozomi" officially become the Sony Xperia S, then we heard about the Sony ST25i "Kumquat" that will allegedly be called the Sony "Xperia U" and now we head more rumors of Sony using letters of the alphabet. The same Indonesian Telecoms Regulatory body that brought us the info about the Xperia U is now revealing that the device codenamed LT22i "Nypon" recently tipped and spotted online will indeed hit the market as Sony Xperia P.

To sum it up, we have the Xperia S, Xperia U and Xperia P; all these testify that Sony might be adopting a single-letter naming convention -- the same way it does with tablets (Sony Tablet P and Tablet S). We just have to hear official wording from the manufacturer explaining the algorithm of attributing letters to phones.
