Leaked screenshots show Nokia Carla OS

The upcoming Nokia “Carla” OS update is set to roll out for the Nokia 808 Pureview, Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 603 handsets. A new post showed up on NokiaNesia blog today containing a set of screenshots of a Nokia handset running the Nokia Carla OS.

According to the leaked screenshots of the Nokia Carla OS, we can observe that there’s a new Lock screen without Unlock button and you need to Swipe it to unlock the screen. There’s a new on-screen QWERTY keyboard, which looks like it has been adopted from Windows Phone OS and the Nokia Browser has also been updated with some new UI improvements.

The Music player has also has also got some refreshed improvements such as the New Interface for Option with Blue button, which seems to have been inspired by Meego Harmattan UI. The source has also mentioned that the Finnish mobile maker isn’t bringing the new Nokia Carla OS update for its 1st generation Symbian^3 handsets such as the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01. Hopefully, Nokia will manage to bring the update for these handsets too.

Amazon joins the Lumia 900 pre-order party – 1¢ for new customers

AT&T and Walmart on Nokia Lumia 900 pre-orders. Honestly, any time there are hot sales going on, Amazon usually gets itself into the mix, so it is no surprise that we just heard Amazon dropped the Lumia 900 down to a penny for new customers. Right now both the black and cyan versions can be pre-ordered from Amazon Wireless. New AT&T customers opening an individual or family account are eligible to purchase this handset for 1 cent.

Existing customers looking to extend their contract will be charged $119.99 and those looking to add a line to a family account will be charged $139.99. As we told you yesterday, Walmart is allowing existing customers to purchase the Windows Phone handset for just $49.99 with a new 2-year contract, so those of you in that category are better off with the Walmart deal. The no contract price is still $499.99, but most people can dodge sales tax by going through Amazon, so that may be an advantage for some.

Nokia Lumia 610c CDMA Windows Phone Announced For China

Nokia launched its first Windows Phone CDMA handsets in China, now the world’s biggest smartphone market. The Nokia Lumia 800C, a version of the flagship Lumia 800, and the budge Lumia 610C will represent Nokia’s WP portfolio in the world’s most populous country.

The Lumia 800C is made to work on China Telecom’s 3G network, but apart from that there is little difference from the original unibody design and hardware guts. The handset is CDMA-compatible and will be launched in April in Tianyi FlyYoung shops and Nokia’s own stores.

The first 100,000 buyers get to download Fruit Ninja and Plants vs Zombies for free from the Markeplace. The budget Lumia 610C wasn’t given an exact release date, but is still expected to come in Q2 2012. The handset is among the first to lower the bar on Windows Phone and features only 256MB of RAM, a shortcut that allows it to keep a very low price. At the same time, Microsoft has worked with Nokia to ensure the WP experience remains smooth as molasses.

Nokia To Launch Two Budget MeeGo Smartphones?

If you’ve never played around with the Nokia N9, the only MeeGo handset on the market, then you’re missing out. It’s one of those handset that geeks everywhere get a little nostalgic about because it MeeGo really was a great operating system. According to an industry insider Nokia is working on 2 new low end MeeGo handsets, and information was recieved directly from Nokia’s Next Billion Group.

Since Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft, the company has essentially been divided into two groups, one focused on Windows Phone and the Next Billion Group who is reponsible for the S40 & Asha lines. The two groups have completely different tasks, the Windows team obviously keeps Microsoft happy and the Next Billion Group is tasked with creating low costs handsets which will likely be the first place that they will access the internet. Even though Windows Phone has the budget Lumia 610, Windows Phone isn’t the capable of being a low cost handset for a few different reasons.

The big question is “Why would Nokia still care about Meego?”

The most obvious reason is that Windows Phone just can’t compete in the low end smartphone game. First there is the operating system which isn’t free, that alone drives up the price. If we take a look at the latest budget Windows phone the Lumia 610, it is a 256mb devices and some features are being disabled because the device just doesn’t have the available RAM.

Let’s keep on looking at Nokia’s other operating system options, there is also their S40 java based devices aka the new Asha line. This line up of handsets haven’t exactly received stellar sales numbers. One of the reasons the line isn’t performing as well is that the touch experience isn’t competitive. When you’re competing on price point it’s often about packing in as many features as possible and if you go up against similarly priced Android handsets there it is really no contest.

Nokia could also use Symbian, expect they can’t, Symbian is now run by Accenture so they don’t have control over the Symbian device roadmaps which is aimed at high end phones. So we’re going to see the same problems here as in Windows Phone 7 and the base cost of fully functioning feature rich handset are going to be too high.

MeeGo is also a lot more adaptable than Windows Phone, its roots are in open source. PhoneNews raises some good points around MeeGo, if we think about where the next billion handsets are coming from they are going to be in areas where solar power charging may be more important than ten-point multitouch. MeeGo can also work with monochrome or e-ink display’s and the Windows Phone platform restrictions would shoot down the innovation that Nokia will need to drop smartphone technology in places where it cannot thrive today.

Nokia Lumia 610 To Feature WiFi Hotspot

Nokia announced the new Nokia Lumia 610 at last months MWC, and the device is the companies first budget Windows Phone device, although it looks like it will come with a feature that some of the more expensive Nokia Windows Phone devices don’t have.

Nokia have listed the device on their website, and it looks like it will have a WiFi hotpsot feature that will let you share the handsets connection with up to five devices. As a reminder the Nokia Lumia 610 features 3.7 inch WVGA capacitive LCD touchscreen display which has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, plus a single core Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 800MHz processor, 256MB of RAM and 16GB of built in storage.

Other specifications on the Nokia Lumia 610 include a 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and an LED flash, plus a 1300 mAh battery and it will be available some time this quarter.

Nokia Lumia 900 To Land On AT&T 8th April?

We were expecting the Nokia Lumia 900 to be available from AT&T some time this month, although we heard earlier this week that it looks like it will land on AT&T in April, with April the 22nd as a rumored launch date.

Now according to the guys over at The Verge, it would appear that AT&T may launch the Nokia Lumia 900 on the 8th of April, and this new apparently comes from an AT&T store manager. As a reminder, the Lumia 900 comes with a single core 1.4GHz processor and a 4.3 inch AMOLED ClearBlack touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

Other specifications on the handset include Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, plus a front facing 1 megapixel camera, a rear facing 8 megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, 16GB of built in storage, WiFi and 4G LTE. Of course this date has yet to be confirmed by AT&T, so we can’t say for sure that this will be the official launch date, but we suspect the handset will hit AT&T some time next month.

Nokia Holding Windows Phone Event In China March 28th

Nokia China is going to hold an event on the 28th of March according to All About Windows Phone. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s going to be announced at said event. Nokia’s been saying that they’re going to bring Windows Phones to the Chinese market in the first half of 2012 since they first showed off the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 at Nokia World back in October of last year. The fact that it’s finally happening, half a year later, warms out hearts since Nokia needs to make their smartphones available in as many countries as possible. The Finnish handset maker sold less than 1 million Lumia handsets in Q4 2011, which isn’t exactly promising, but it’s early days and things can only go up from here, right? Curiously a website known as CNMO.com found four Lumia smartphones that have recently gained regulatory approval in China: the Lumia 800, 800c, 710, and 719c. The 800 and 710 we’re already familiar with, the 800x and 719c are expected to be nothing more than CDMA variants.

What we want to know is when will Nokia bring devices like the Lumia 610 to China? Announced last month at Mobile World Congress, the 610 will cost roughly 185 EUR before taxes and subsidies. That’s almost 100 EUR less than Nokia’s current low end Windows Phone, the Lumia 710. China has plenty of rich people, we’ve all seen the insane lines at the Apple Store in Shanghai, but the majority of folks are your typical run of the mill middle class rural farmers who’ve packed their bags to move to the big city. They’re not the kind of people who buy high end smartphones. For them, something like the 400 EUR Lumia 800 is simply a pipedream.

All that being said, for all we know Nokia already has plans to bring the Lumia 610 to China, they’re likely just going to bring it over there later and focus on other countries first.

Nokia To Show Off Six New Handsets At MWC 2012?

It is only two weeks until Mobile World Congress kicks off in Barcelona, we are expecting to see a wide range of new smartphones from a number of manufacturers. One of those is Nokia, and we have already heard rumors that the company will unveil a couple of new Windows Phone devices, and not it looks like Nokia may have around six new handsets to unveil although not all of them will be Windows Phone devices.

According to a recent report by Pocket Now, out of the six new devices, at least two of them are expected to be Windows Phone smartphones, one will possibly be a Symbian powered device, whilst the other three are expected to be feature phones. It will be interesting to see what new Nokia devices are unveiled, I am particularly interested in seeing their new Windows Phone devices, and we hope they unveil some of the rumored devices we have been hearing about over the last few weeks.

Nokia N9 might dual-boot into ICS soon

The first and only MeeGo smartphone, the Nokia N9, might soon turn into an Android device. Well, if you’re into some hacking - Alexey Roslyakov of the NITDroid team has posted a picture of ICS running on the Nokia N9. The title is “progress” and even though it’s still just an early build with its fair share of issues, it seems that work is advancing.

The NITDroid team is also working on porting Android 4.0 to the good old Maemo-running N900. Now, one thing that’s particularly great about the combination of a Nokia N9 and MeeGo is the combination of a device with no physical buttons with an operating system that requires none. The handset also sports a fairly large 3.9-inch display, so you’d have some extra space for the navigational controls.

Finally, Roslyakov mentions that you can put your worries aside when it comes to MeeGo on the N9 and Android - both operating systems could run in a dual-boot setup in the future. Here’s to hoping.

Nokia Lumia 800 Review:

Nokia Ace Likely To Be Shown At CES

The rumored Nokia Lumia 900 (aka Nokia Ace) Windows Phone 7 smart phone. We said that it would basically be the Nokia Lumia 800 only a bit bigger and featuring a LTE modem. The Nokia Lumia 900 is now official and the speculation seems to be correct.

The new smart phone made it debut today at a Nokia CES 2012 press conference. An AT&T exclusive, the phone features a cyan blue polycarbonate shell, 4.3" AMOLED screen with 800 x 480 resolution, 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM, 8 Megapixel rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics (stated 28mm, f/2.2) and dual LED flash, front facing camera, LTE 4G modem, and a rather spacious 1840mAH battery. Sporting the Windows Phone 7 operating system, the phone has a rated seven hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time.

It will be available in either cyan or black colors in the US within the next few months and bound to the AT&T network with "aggressive" pricing. Nokia stated in their conference that it has been working closely with Qualcomm to ensure solid performance on AT&T's LTE network. SIM-free and carrier unlocked phones will also be available; however, it is not clear whether users in the US will be able to purchase them (or if they would need to be imported). Ballmer stated plainly that the "Lumia 900 is a very exciting launch," and that AT&T is critical to the WP7 future.

Symbian Becomes Nokia Belle, Headed To Symbian Devices February 2012

It looks like Nokia has decided to change the name of its Symbian OS, with the new version which was previous called Symbian Belle, now being called Nokia Belle, and Nokia has announced that the latest version of the software is headed to Symbian devices soon.

Nokia has announced that it will release the new version of Nokia Belle to a range of devices in February 2012, and the list includes the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, Nokia E6, Nokia X7, Nokia C6-01, Nokia Oro and the Nokia C7.

As far as we heard, Symbian Belle was going to start availability from Q4 onwards. Remember we joked about whether that meant Q4 2012.

This was confirmed during the launch and during the Q&A about the new Belle phones when asked specifically regarding updates for earlier Symbian devices. We have 3 and a bit weeks left or 25 days of Q4. Do you think Symbian Belle is going to appear in that time? Indications seem to be that it might not arrive and as far as Nokia Thailand is concerned, we’ve received some information to suggest this might be the case. I would be quite weary on posting as I’m not fully able to disclose this source and details and also indicate any concerns, but but I had some other other ‘information’ from another source that I trust that indicated this might be the case (of a no show Q4) some months back. Odd though that Belle keeps coming on and off on Navifirm. Perhaps tests are still ongoing?

Do you reckon it’s just part of a staggered update and that Thailand is just later on the list or is the whole update delayed? It wouldn’t be the first time a software update doesn’t appear on time. Looking at some positives, Nokia has at least delivered the new Symbian Belle phones, 701 and 700 in time. Cheers anonymous for the tip.

Could This Be The Nokia Lumia 900?

Look what just popped up in our mailbox. At first glance it looks just like the Nokia Lumia 800, but there are subtle clues that it is a different devices such as the lower-set capacitive keys. If this is indeed the Nokia Lumia 900 it would explain why rumours of a Lumia 800 with LTE going round, given the close resemblance between the devices. It is striking however that there is no clear front-facing camera, but there is a circular area in the top left corner which may still conceal this.

The Nokia 900 is a rumoured Windows Phone with a 4.3” ClearBlack AMOLED screen, HSPA+ data speeds, and a 1.4 GHz single-core processor. It is rumoured to have an 8-megapixel rear camera and 16 GB or 32 GB of storage. Front-facing camera and gyro sensor is currently unknown. It is rumored to be released Q1 2012 on AT&T. Other country release dates are currently unknown.
