LG Optimus 4X HD To Launch In India In May

The quad-core Tegra3-powered LG Optimus 4X HD smartphone may be debuting as early as May in India, though it’s still unclear when the phone will arrive in the U.S. The LG flagship smartphone features a quad-core processor, 4.7-inch 720p HD display, and a slim profile. The phone is expected to arrive in June in the UK. Other LG smartphones, such as the 5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio Optimus Vu and the Optimus 3D Max will debut shortly after the launch of the Optimus 4X HD. The Optimus 4X HD is one of several new quad-core smartphones that were launched late last month at Mobile World Congress. The device is very similar to the HTC One X, including the screen size, though the One X will shed its quad-core processor in favor of an impressive dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU from Qualcomm when that smartphone arrives on AT&T. Along with the HTC One X, the LG Optimus 4X HD will be among the first smartphones with a quad-core processor to hit the market. Both phones will utilize NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 CPU. Huawei is also in the race for quad-core supremacy with its own quad-core CPU known as the K3V2 found inside the Ascend D quad smartphone series. Pricing information is not yet available for the India launch of the LG Optimus 4X HD and LG has not made an official announcement regarding availability yet.

Sony Xperia S gets Unboxed

The time draws ever nearer to the launch of the first Sony branded phone, the Xperia S. In Europe we expect to see it both on and off contract for sale by mid-March. But what about the rest of the world? Well, the guys over at SoyaCincau in Malaysia have got their hands on a review unit of the white version of the Xperia S. Like Europe, Malaysia are expecting the release of the device in March, albeit without any indication of when in March as yet.

They've put together an unboxing video for everyone to see. OK, so unboxings aren't the most interesting things to watch. But the SoyaCincau guys have put together a two-part, detailed look at the retail version of the device. All that remains now is to actually get the Xperia S into hands. It is a feast of specs, it has the looks, and that screen. Well, that screen looks amazing.

LG Miracle Windows Phone Device Appears On Video

Some new photos have surfaced offering up another peek at the LG Fantasy/Miracle alongside a brief video of the handset in action. The device in question has been leaking for a while now, but this latest leak has afforded us the best look at the Miracle yet. As you can see in the shot of the unannounced handset's backside, the Miracle is packing 5-megapixel camera, and there's also a front-facing shooter on its face. You can find a clip demoing the Miracle embedded below.

Besides the aforementioned cameras, the LG Miracle is also said to feature a spec sheet that includes a 4-inch NOVA display, 1GHz processor, 8GB internal storage and NFC support. Sounds like a decent Windows Phone to me. The Miracle is said to be making the jump from rumor to reality at Mobile World Congress later this month, so it may not be long before we get to see if the phone is as good as its name makes it out to be. If you want even more Miracle in the mean time, hit up the Mobilissimo link below for a few more shots of the device.

More pictures of the LG Miracle/Fantasy E740

Few days ago, we showed you some leaked photographs of an unannounced handset called the LG Miracle. Recently, a Romanian website put up pictures of the same device, calling it the LG Fantasy E740, and then quickly took them down. It is not known which name will be used when the model is launched in the first quarter, but we would imagine that there is a good chance that LG will be displaying the Miracle/Fantasy later this month at MWC.

Last month we showed you some leaked pix of the LG Fantasy E740, calling the device a high-end unit that would be the Korean manufacturer's first smartphone to be powered by the second-gen Windows Phone OS. The user agent site showed that the device had IE9 aboard which confirmed that Mango was installed out of the box. Now that it appears that the LG Miracle and LG Fantasy E740 are one and the same device, we can look at the pictures below and hope that we get a Miracle or a Fantasy in Barcelona.

Motorola Gleam Review:

RIM BlackBerry 3G+ PlayBook

It has to be tough for a company that was in a healthy position looking back a few years ago, but since then, they’ve been unable to contend in the competitive smartphone market. Heck, they even made a stab to enter the lucrative tablet market, but as we’ve seen with the PlayBook, it hasn’t quite taken off all that well – and it doesn’t help when reports hint to lackluster sales. Well, with 2011 behind us and 2012 bringing some much-needed change for the company, it’ll be intriguing to see where the company goes with its portfolio.

Interestingly enough, we’re getting a good look into what RIM intends to bring to the tablet this year – well, that’s because RIM’s entire 2012 roadmap has been leaked. First up on the table is what appears to be a 3G enabled version of the QNX based tablet, simply dubbed as the 3G+ BlackBerry PlayBook. Rather than calling it a 4G tablet outright, the attached “3G+” name is on there because the leaked slides mentions HSPA+ connectivity as its biggest differentiator with the previous model, as opposed to being a 4G LTE equipped model. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing a 10-inch PlayBook of some sort, as some of the previous rumors have indicated.

Secondly, RIM appears to be positioning two new Curve models as being a part of its “onboarding” category, which is nothing more than internal speak for a device that’s intended to bring feature phone users to smartphones. Looking at the leaked slides, these expected first time smartphone users will probably find the BlackBerry Curve 9220 and 9320 as the perfect models.

Specs-wise, they’re nothing worth bragging about seeing that they’re very entry-level like. In fact, the two smartphones feature a 2.44 QVGA display (not a touchscreen), GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, microSD card slot, 512MB RAM, and that typical Curve keyboard. Well, what’s different between the two is that the 9220 packs a 2-megapixel fixed focus camera, while the 9320 packs on a 3.2-megapixel extended depth of field camera. So yeah, they’re hardly devices deemed as next-generation, but then again, the Curve series has also been associated with low-end specs.

Last on the list and on tap for a later release in the year, is none other than RIM’s first BlackBerry 10 powered smartphone – codenamed London. Initially, it’s expected to land sometime in late September, but the leaked roadmap alludes to a later October release. Needless to say, that can be a damper for those itching to see RIM’s first BlackBerry 10 smartphone, but when you take into account what’s at stake, the later release might be beneficial – especially when expectations are going to be riding high for it.

So there you have it folks! We’re given an idea as to what RIM intends to accomplish this year, but if course, release dates and devices can change at any time.

LG to offer new triple-SIM featurephone

Looking around the mobile space, you don’t see a lot of news on upcoming feature phones – especially ones that are only announced for Russia. Yet LG’s A290 is worth noting, as it will be the first phone from a major manufacturer to offer three different SIM slots. So for those of you who need a world phone with three different numbers (or networks) this is the phone for you.

Well, as long as “you” happens to live in Russia you'll be able to pick one up in February. The phone seems poised to put some pressure on Nokia’s Russian marketshare; Nokia apparently sells a lot of dual-SIM featurephones in Russia, and checking out the gallery below, the LG N290 has more than a passing resemblance to Nokia-branded handsets of this type.

Let us know, would you be interested in a triple-SIM phone if one were available in your market? Meanwhile, you can see how it stacks against the competition when you compare mobile phones via our in-depth phone specs comparison.

Windows Phone 8 Details Leaked

It would appear that some details have been leaked on the next generation of Microsoft’s mobile platform, Windows Phone 8, the platform is apparently codenamed Apollo, something we have heard before, and it will be released after the Windows Phone Tango update.

The details were revealed in a video from Microsoft’s Windows Phone manager Joe Belifoire, and the video was intended for Microsoft’s partners at Nokia, although they guys from Pocket Now seem to have got access to the video.

According to the report, Windows Phone 8 will support multi-core processors, a total of four new screen resolutions and the addition of removable SD card storage. Windows Phone 8 will also offer support for Near Field Communications (NFC), and it will come with some sort of contact less payment system which Microsoft calls the ‘Wallet experience’. It looks like the individual mobile carriers will be able to control Microsoft’s NFC payment system,. by a secure element on the devices actual SIM card or by the build in hardware of the device.

Microsoft also intends to have Windows Phone 8 fully integrated with their next generation PC operating system, Windows 8, and developers will apparently be able to use the same code that is used in Windows 8 for Windows Phone 8, with heavy overlapping in security, multimedia, networking stacks and more.

So this would mean that Microsoft intends to release Windows Phone 8 at the same time as Windows 8, and as it is expected before the end of the year we suspect we will see Windows Phone 8 before the end of 2012 as well.

Motorola Droid 4 Coming December 22nd?

So the Motorola DROID 4 isn't coming today like some previous rumors had speculated it would. Disappointing, right? That doesn't mean that today is going to be a D4-free day, though! A new set of renders showing off the slider has surfaced today, giving us a look at the DROID 4 from just about every angle imaginable. Up above you can see the face of the D4, complete with DROID RAZR-like angled corners, and down below is its face and QWERTY keyboard.

There may not be a ton of details in these photos that we haven't seen in previous DROID 4 leaks, but now that the phone won't be coming until February, we'll have to take whatever little morsels that we can get our hands on.

Other specifications include a front facing HD video camera, plus a rear facing 8 megapixel camera which can record full HD video in 1080p, plus a slide out QWERTY keyboard. Of course this hasn’t been officially confirmed by Verizon as yet, so we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out if the Droid 4 will launch.

Shopping around to find a smartphone for someone during the holidays is a job on its own. However, once you’ve managed to pick the right one finally, you’re then left to hassle over how you’ll be able to get the phone activated on the correct phone number without messing around with their plan or contract extension. Dell Venue Pro gets Mango, completes the set

The Dell Venue Pro has finally received the update to Windows Phone Mango, which means that all Windows Phones now have the WP 7.5 update released and available to users.

This is of course the benefit of the tightly controlled Windows Phone ecosystem, much like Apple's iOS ecosystem, where the hardware is all standardized and there is no such thing as customizing the base platform. That kind of control leads to easy and widespread updates. So, when the Dell Venue Pro update to Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) began rolling out yesterday, that completed the set and Mango is now officially available for all Windows Phone handsets.

Of course, the tight control also means there is no such thing as dual-core CPUs, but as long as the software is optimized properly, it doesn't make too big a difference. The lack of displays above WVGA resolution is a bit more noticeable, but still manageable. As always, there are benefits and tradeoffs to each platform.

Motorola DROID XYBOARD branding confirmed, a pair of LTE tablets launching on Verizon by year's end

The Motorola XOOM 2 and its little brother, the XOOM 2 Media Edition, will both carry the DROID XYBOARD branding when they launch on Verizon. Furthermore, both tablets will be equipped with LTE radios and will be out in the U.S. before the year's end, as the carrier stated.

The Motorola XOOM 2 is a 10.1-inch tablet that was unveiled in the U.K. about a month ago, along with the 8.2-inch XOOM 2 Media Edition. Both of them run Honeycomb and are thinner than the original Motorola XOOM. In terms of hardware, the tablets are pretty similar as they are both powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor backed up by a gig of RAM and have a pair of cameras – a 5-megapixel one on the back and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter.

However, while the 10.1-inch XYBOARD will come with a stylus and will be targeting business customers, its 8.2-inch counterpart will be more of a media-centric device as it comes with virtual surround sound and... a subwoofer. When it comes to accessories, a keyboard and cover combo is in stock for the 10.1-inch tablet, and a docking station will be offered for the 8.2-inch model. Bear in mind, that neither Motorola nor Verizon provided a full list of the XYBOARD tablets' tech specs, so their hardware might still vary from that of their European variants. Their price was not disclosed either, but if the rumors are to be trusted, $529 is what the 10.1-inch model will cost.
