SugarSync 3.0 iOS App Arrives

SugarSync announced an update to the company’s iPad app, jumping up to SugarSync 3.0 and bringing a collection of new features to justify the big bump.

Of course the new SugarSync app (iTunes) is optimized for the iPad display, thanks to an all out to re-write of the new app from scratch with features that take advantage of the large iPad display. The new SugarSync iPad app has a very nice looking interface that now relies on gestures like drag, swipe and more to make it easier to manage files stored in the cloud service.

Another cool new feature is the ability to see the contents of multiple folders at once. As you can see in the screenshot below, this allows you to see which folders you are browsing in, much like the accordion view on OS X’s finder. You’ll also find easier access to backup options that allow you to backup photos or videos to any folder on your computer. Sure, you have iCloud and PhotoStream, but it’s nice to have this extra ability to backup specific media files to your computer.

SugarSync is a free cloud storage service with 5GB of free storage for every user who signs up. The service offers more control about what syncs to each of your devices than Dropbox, which makes the larger storage plans attractive. SugarSync also allows you to share large files easily, and it doesn’t count the files you share against your co-worker or friend’s storage like many competitors do.

What is SugarSync?:

InstaGamer iOS App Makes A Game From Instagram

InstaGamer is a curious little app — half game, half companion app, it's basically Concentration with a little twist: you discover new Instagram images while you play. Before starting, you define a search term, featured feed, or photos from your own or friends' albums, and they're then placed face-down and the game begins. You can "like" photos and follow users from inside the game as long as you're already signed up for Instagram (although you can still play without being a member). It's a pretty simple concept, but certainly good fun and a nice way to discover new content. The app is available now as a free download from the App Store.

A new iOS application has been created called InstaGamer which is a small Instagram companion application, that provides you with a game to discover new content on Instagram. InstaGamer has both a single and double player mode. To start game simply select a search term featured feed, or photos from either your or your friends Instagram photo album. Then to start playing simply place the images face down and your are away. Free MLB At Bat 2012 For Android, iOS

Major League Baseball’s MLB At Bat 2012 app launches on both Android and iOS. The app brings the widely praised franchise back for another season and it has several important changes for baseball lovers.

Among these is the fact that it will be one of the first apps outside of the publishing world that will have access to Apple’s recurring monthly subscription option right in the app. The radio streaming app Pandora got them last November. The new app is also now free to download from the App Store and there are some nice subscription options. The Next Web had a chance to speak to the MLB about the app and the new features and it looks like it will be another great version of the app.

For the first time ever, MLB At Bat 2012 will be one universal app, free to all, with Android and iOS feature parity. That means that the app is identical, across all platforms, with all features available. Previously, due to technical restrictions, Android users couldn’t access some of the video highlight features, among others. Now, every version of the app has all of the features available, which is very cool. The iOS app is also a universal binary, which means that one download will work on all of Apple’s devices. There was a ton of work put in to combine the codebases of the apps and to bring them into a harmonious package that will work across all devices.

Another big change for At Bat 2012 is the cost. The app is freely downloadable from the App Store and the Android Market, which is a change from last year, when it was a $15 download on the iPhone and iPad. The free app is roughly the equivalent of the ‘At Bat Lite’ app that has now been done away with. Instead, the MLB is letting you grab it for free, and then will offer several ways to unlock the app’s additional functionality. Any feature unlocks you purchase, say, on an iPhone, are also available on the iPad via a ‘restore’ purchase button.

1. The default app is similar to the ‘Lite’ version from last year, which offers a bunch of stuff including:
Scores
Standings
News
Team Content

2. The second tier is an annual $14.99 price. This brings you everything that you get with the standard app and also includes:

Pitch FX (the pitch-by-pitch calling)
Game Day Audio
Stats
Highlights
Live Look-ins (video)
Condensed Games and video library archive
Free live game of the day

3. The third tier has exactly the same features, but bills at a monthly $2.99. This subscription level is available to iOS users only, but the MLB indicated that it was working to bring it to Android as well.

4. All features are free to MLB.tv subscribers, who just authorize account after launching the app. This essentially makes the app free on any and all platforms for anyone with an MLB.TV subscription. In addition, live video broadcasts of some of the 150 Spring Training games and all 2,430 regular season games are available to subscribers.

If you’re not familiar with the At Bat App, then you don’t know just how great a job the team has been doing over the past couple of years. Since the app launched in 2008, it’s been the gold standard for sports apps. Really, anything from the NFL, NBA or NHL pales in comparison to the level of detail at work in the flagship MLB app. You can tell that the team respects baseball, but also loves building great apps, something that you just don’t find in a lot of sports apps, where more often than not you’ll find a web view embedded in a crappy looking native frame, with all of the stink of a cash grab. Conversely, the At Bat App is s a joy to use and has become an integral part of my baseball watching experience.

iPhone's Stock Weather, Compass, Calculator, Clock, Stocks And Voice Memo Apps To iPad

If you are a new owner of an iPad 2 then you have probably been shocked to find that some of the key stock applications are not there when you turn it on. These are all natively installed on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. You may have spent some time searching for these items on your new iPad but Apple has decided that it is not necessary to have the likes of Weather, Calculator, Voice Memo, Compass and clock on the iPad.

If you want these apps then all is not lost and the jailbreak community is here to the rescue. Ryan Petrich who is an iOS developer has produced his latest iPad enhancement which brings these native applications to the iPad's springboard. This tweak is called Belfry and it has been released into the BigBoss repository free of charge. It is available to download for all jailbroken iPads. Installing this tweak will add six additional icons to the SpringBoard and you can launch them as normal apps just the same as the iPhone.

This is something that has been talked about for quite some time with the jailbreak community and if you intend to download Belfry make sure you read the information in Cydia first. Belfry is only available for iPads runnign iOS 5 or higher and users will definitely experience some visual anomalies after the iPad has rebooted. There may be some graphical errors when running these apps and this is due to the way the iPad handles the running of native iPhone applications. This can be partially rectified by installing a tweak called RetinaPad along with Belfry which will render the applications in full screen mode in the best possible way for the iPad. In order to use Belfry you will need to jailbreak your iPad and you can jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe.

iPhone Gets Live Streaming With Time Warner Cable App

After finally issuing a version of its TWC TV app for Android tablets and phones (sans-live TV streaming, for now) Time Warner Cable has finally made its iOS version, which launched last March on the iPad, compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch. There's no additional charge for the app which allows for the aforementioned live TV viewing (as long as you're on your home WiFi) and DVR scheduling, and the accompanying blog post reveals the available list of channels has reached 196. We should probably mention that the app is unlikely to play nicely with any jailbroken iOS devices it encounters, so some extra hackery may be in order to get things working there.

iPhone owners can now watch what’s on Time Warner Cable even if they are not at home as TWC has updated its iOS app to allow live streaming. The new app also allows you to control your Time Warner cable and access an interactive programming guide, aside from the direct streaming to the phone mentioned above.

The remote control function is pretty straightforward, as it gives you control of your set-top box right from your phone. The interactive programming guide, on the other hand, is a great addition as it allows the user to manage DVR recordings and even set your unit to record a programme at a certain time. Now you don’t have to miss your favourite shows as you can schedule them beforehand, with Time Warner Cable allowing TV listings up to seven days on its interactive programming guide.

Fake Spotify App Appears In Windows Phone Marketplace

Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace isn't immune to having apps being uploaded that appear to be one thing but in fact are something else. WPCentral.com reports that seems to be the case with someone who has uploaded an app that appears at first to be the official Windows Phone version of Spotify. The app, which was actually made available to download on December 20, has the Spotify logo but costs 99 cents to download. The real Spotify app, which uses an icon instead of the logo, is free to download and was first released in November.

Whoever uploaded this app clearly wanted people to think they were downloading the real Spotify application. Instead, this imposter app simply offers up some news feeds and YouTube videos. It's not clear how this app got past Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace application process.

In any case, consumers should definitely be aware of this issue since it can cause some confusion, especially among non-tech savvy Windows Phone users who might think that Spotify would charge people to download an app for their streaming music service.

It's actually a genuine app (it doesn't perform anything malicious) other than a copied name, if you were to rename it, there would be nothing wrong with it. So it must be a case of the reviewer making a dodo when checking the name. It is the application provider's responsibility to determine if the application provider has the right to use the chosen name, content, logos, copyright, trademarks, online services & API's."

On Microsoft's side of the certification policy, they do nothing themselves regarding copyright - and as can be seen waive the need to themselves check. It's not part of the certification policy for Microsoft to check, so on Microsoft's part, this is all fine. They only validify copyright directly relating to Microsoft products.
