Nokia axes plans for the 600

Nokia axes plans for the 600

Nokia has abruptly decided to cancel all plans for the unreleased Symbian Belle powered 600 saying that they have decided not to ship it to markets after careful consideration.

The Nokia 600 appeared to be a mid-range offering set to launch as an alternative to the Finnish manufacturers upcoming Windows Phone devices. The 600 features a 3.2-inch capacitive display and is powered by a single-core 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. Around the back of the smartphone is a 5 megapixel camera that can record video in 720p HD. However, now that it has been cancelled even before it’s never seen the light of day that camera will never be put to use.

In a statement issued by Nokia in regards to the cancellation of the 600 this is what they had to say:

After careful consideration we have decided not to ship the Nokia 600 to markets, we are constantly continuing to refine our portfolio to bring consumers the best possible range of devices to meet their diverse needs.

The axing of the Nokia 600 comes only a week after they pulled the covers off of the Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 Windows Phone handsets. Nokia wasn’t clear if the overall response of the two new devices led to the 600’s unfortunate demise. Nokia appears ready to go all in with Windows Phone and might even make Symbian a thing of the past. Tell us what you think.

Stories you shouldn't have missed this week

Stories you shouldn't have missed this week
It's like this week started on Wednesday, right? Arguably the biggest news from the week was the long, looong-awaited official introduction of Nokia's first Windows Phones, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710. However, it finally happened, letting us ponder over the fruits of the newly-formed partnership between Nokia and Microsoft. And to tell you the truth, it could be worse you know, after all, these new Mango-powered smartphones don't look that bad... Actually, we can safely say that the Nokia Lumia 800 is a real beauty with its innovative design. And the mainstream offering in the Lumia 710 - it simply seems like a pretty good package for its mid-end role. Anyways, here's all the interesting coverage around the new Nokia Windows Phones that one might ask... and even more!

Nokia Pulse Beta is already lurking in the Marketplace

Nokia Pulse Beta is already lurking in the Marketplace
The Nokia Pulse Beta app for private check-ins and push communication has been already ported to the Windows Phone Marketplace, and is hiding there in the shadows. In beta form, of course.

The app allows for a new take on mutually keeping track with friends and family after a registration with Nokia Services. It supports push notifications, and also has a Web interface so you can keep an eye what's going on with your circle while working on the desktop.

Nokia Pulse is location aware, and allows you to follow what's interesting around you, who else is nearby and communicate with preset groups in your friends or family circle.

When you land at the airport, for instance, instead of calling/texting people to pick you up, you can shout out "Landed!" via Nokia Pulse, and the app will send it along with your location to the recipients. They, respectively, can send you "on may way" message, which will have their whereabouts in traffic attached.

Alternatively, the app lists activities or places around you while you wait somewhere with relevant info, so you can share them and comment or arrange meet-ups there, sort of a more private version of Facebook or Twitter updates. The promo video below shows some of the Nokia Pulse Beta's features.

Nokia World 2011: Live Coverage!

Nokia World 2011: Live Coverage!
Welcome to our liveblog covering the opening keynote of Nokia World 2011, featuring CEO Stephen Elop. We're quite excited because the still largest phone manufacturer by volume is expected to finally unveil its first Windows Phone-based smartphones. As a matter of fact, the very first leaks prior to the beginning of the event have started, hinting that we might see a total of three new Windows Phones - the Nokia Lumia 800, Lumia 710 and 900. Whether that would be the case, remains to be seen. Who knows, there may be even more in store for us!

Stay tuned for all the details, as the event starts at 4AM eastern, 3AM central, 1 AM pacific time, or 9AM GMT. You can follow our live updates here, or via our special Twitter channel - @PhoneArenaLive.

One more thing leaked out just before the Stephen Elop's opening keynote at Nokia World – a QWERTY Series 40 device, which could be one of the more affordable devices introduced at the event. One of the pictures is pretty large and you can clearly see a red QWERTY handset advertised with “You. Me. Everyone. Let's QWERTY.”

Now, this could be the Nokia 303, which was rumored to run on Series 40 6th Edition and be of the Touch and Type variety of hybrid devices. The device also looks like it's coming with both Wi-Fi and 3G support.

If you take a closer look at the pictures below you'd also notice some other boxes, but those required more than a magnifying glass to decipher and we'd rather wait for the event to see what they contain.

Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports: the attempt to bring exclusivity for Nokia Windows Phones

Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports: the attempt to bring exclusivity for Nokia Windows Phones
Nokia must have really been between the rock and the hard place when it announced it will adopt Windows Phone as its primary mobile platform. One of the justifications for the eye-popping decision back in February was pointed out as Android not offering ways for Nokia to differentiate its handsets among the sea of phones powered by the green robot.

Well, it's not that easy to differentiate in the Windows Phone ecosystem either - the chassis specs are predefined by Microsoft, and Redmond keeps a tight grip over the uniformity of the interface. Still, the Finns managed to pull ahead with some exclusive features that will be available only on Nokia Windows Phones.

Not surprisingly, one of the beautiful things about owning an Android powered smartphone is that handset owners are treated to free turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps – and it helps that the experience has been refined with each update. On the other hand, Windows Phone users have been starving for something similar on their end to perfectly round out the experience.

Thankfully, Nokia’s upcoming beauties in the Lumia 710 and 800, have something called Nokia Drive, which essentially brings that deep navigational experience that Windows Phone users desperately desire. Specific only to Nokia’s Windows Phone smartphones, the application is a full-fledged navigational app that offers free voice guidance instructions to get you to your destination. Indeed, it offers all of the essentials we typically find with other similar apps, like satellite and night views, but what’s nice is that it also combines 3D maps as well – but it’s only limited to major cities and landmarks.

Nevertheless, it’s shaping up to be a tasteful offering for Windows Phone users since you can even download maps by country or region – thus, enabling you to still get directions offline. So yeah, rather than living with the Bing Maps experience, Nokia Drive fully satisfies those navigational desires that longtime users have been demanding. Check out the demonstration of Nokia Drive we managed to see running on the recently announced Nokia Lumia 800.

Can Windows Phone Save Nokia’s Smartphone Business?

Nokia has released its latest quarterly results, and whilst the company posted a third quarter net loss of 68 million Euros, the loss was much lower than expected with Nokia increasing sales of lower priced handsets up 8 percent to almost 90 million units. Next week, on October the 25th Nokia World will take place in London, and we will finally get to see our first Nokia Windows Phone devices, since Nokia and Microsoft announced their new partnership earlier in the year.

We already know that Nokia will be announcing the Nokia 800, which is a Windows Phone Mango device that shares a similar design to the Nokia N9, and we have also heard that they may launch some other Nokia Windows Phone devices at the same time. Nokia have hard poor smartphone sales over the last few years, especially in the US, where the company has been unable to compete with the likes of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android devices.

Nokia has always produced great hardware, what has let them down in recent years is their software, we are looking forward to seeing what they unveil next week, and whether they will be able to turn their smartphone business around with the help of Microsoft’s Windows Phone.
