Nokia shows off video of futuristic HumanForm handset concept

Hot on the heels of showing off their bendable Kinetic Phone, Nokia’s Research Center is showing off an even more futuristic concept for a phone. Using nanotechnology and the Kinetic’s model of navigating via physical interaction, Nokia envisions a device so different you would probably not recognize it as a phone if you happened to find one lying around the office.

The device is based on nanotechnology and some other “yet to be perfected” manufacturing technologies, but the idea is far enough along that Nokia felt it was worth demonstrating on the 25th anniversary of the Nokia Research Center. Mock-ups exist, but the real thing is still a ways off. But what a device it will be if it ever makes its way to market. The device is conceived to be not just flexible, but for the entire surface to be a touch sensitive display. The surface would also be “electro tactile” to provide touch-based feedback to your fingers as you manipulate the surface of the device.

In addition to being flexible, the device is described as being able to change shape itself, molding itself to the users’ individual ear and head shapes for a better listening experience. It’s impossible to predict whether this particular concept device will ever be brought to market, but all of the technologies in the video are currently be researched so it’s safe to say that this video shows off many of the types of advances we’re likely to see in the coming decade, even if the exact form factor may differ.

Nokia Lumia 800 Tops Sales Charts In France

It looks like the new Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone smartphone may already be a hit for Nokia, in France as least, as according to the Windows Phone Blog, the Nokia Lumia 800 has topped the sales charts in France for the first week with the retailer PhoneHouse, which is the Carphone Warehouse here in the UK.

It will be interesting to see how Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone smartphone does in other countries as well, as it will be available in the UK on the 16th of November. The Nokia Lumia 800 is Nokia’s first Windows Phone device and it features and it features a 3.7 inch AMOLED display, a single core 1.4GHz processor and an 8 megapixel camera and comes with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Nokia Lumia 710 To Hit T-Mobile US In January?

Nokia’s first new Windows Phone smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 800 will go on sale in Europe later this month, the other Windows Phone handset that Nokia announced was the Lumia 710. When it was announced Nokia said it would be available in early 2012, and now according to a recent report it could be headed to T-Mobile in the US, some time in January, which would tie in with what Nokia has said previously about launching their Windows Phone devices in the US.

The Lumia 720 features a 3.7 inch WVGA touchscreen display and is powered by Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, processing is provided by a single core 1.4GHz processor and there is 512MB of RAM and 8GB of built in storage. Other specifications on the Nokia Lumia 800 include a 1,300 mAh battery, and an 8 megapixel camera with an LED flash which can record HD video in 108p, there is also Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and a micro USB port. When the Nokia Lumia 710 was announced Nokia said it would retail for 270 Euros before taxes, there are no details on US pricing as yet.

Mystery solved - Nokia Maps will appear for other Windows Phones, but without free voice navigation

That mysterious Nokia Maps app that appeared on the Windows Phone Marketplace not long ago? It turns out that it will indeed be available for download on other Windows Phones than Nokia's Lumia line, and in the coming weeks to boot. Thus Nokia is making good on its promise to make the fruits of its multibillion NAVTEQ acquisition for free to other WP manufacturers in order to help boost the ecosystem.

The catch? It won't feature the free voice-guided offline navigation that Nokia is keeping exclusively for its Lumia line, like the 800 and 710 phones, in the form of a preinstalled app called Drive. Nokia Maps for Windows Phone will feature local POI details (address, phone number, reviews, and photos of up to 25 locations in your vicinity), deep link support, where you can pin destinations to the Start screen, and detailed maps in satellite, 2D, and 3D views (where available).

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that Nokia wants to keep its main differentiator in the Windows Phone world for itself, but Nokia Maps is also a pretty useful piece of software, which will benefit others for free, so no complaints. The best part is that it covers most countries worldwide, so it can fill the huge blank spots that Bing Maps leaves behind.

Nokia Lumia 800 Goes Up For Pre-Order In The UK

Nokia’s new flagship Windows Phone smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 800, which was announced earlier today has now gone up for pre-order in the UK, and is available from the Nokia website, with a couple of mobile carriers here in the UK which include Three and Vodafone.

It looks like the versions of the Nokia Lumia 800 available to pre-order from their website at the moment are ones with a contract, there are no details of the SIM free version as yet. Pricing seems to start at £199 on the cheapest monthly tariff, as soon as we get some more ifnformation on how much the SIM free version of the Nokia Lumia 800 will retail for in the UK we will let you guys know.

Nokia unveiled flexible Kinetic phone prototypes with bendable screens, attempting to wow users with a fun and innovative new device.

Attendees at today's 2011 Nokia World Conference in London got to try out futuristic flex-phones, which let users navigate by bending and twisting the screen to scroll through options and zoom in and out. The Kinetic phones drew smiles and interest from passers-by, who described the elastic phones as "revolutionary" and "mind-blowing."

The devices aren't expected to be on the market anytime soon, since there is no platform integration on them yet and they are currently powered by a hidden computer, but their innovative designs show Nokia continues to be a forward-thinking company.

Nokia is a pioneer when it comes to novel devices that perform unique tasks. Some of their recent creations stand up for incoming calls, for instance, and others use body heat to charge their batteries. The features are fun for people to play with, but may also eventually have practical advantages.

The ability to charge a phone battery with body heat, for example, may come in handy in parts of the world where electricity is spotty, or during a power outage. A flexible screen may make a phone more durable and prevent breakage.

Despite Nokia's crowd-pleasing bendable phones, however, the primary attraction at the London conference is the company's new line of Windows smartphones. Nokia aims to bring itself out of a sales slump with their launch, hoping to regain its place alongside Apple and Google in the market it once dominated through innovative hardware acumen and design.

Is The Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone Headed To The US?

The Nokia Lumia went up for pre-order in the UK, through Nokia’s own website, although it was only available to order if you sign up to a new contract with one of Three mobile providers, Vodafone, Orange and Three.

Now UK mobile retailer Clove has listed a SIM free version of the Nokia Lumia 800 on their website and it will retail for £442.80 including taxes, although Clove haven’t listed a release date for Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone device. The Nokia Lumia 800 comes with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and it features a 3.7 inch AMOLED display, a single core 1.4GHz processor and an 8 megapixel camera.

One of the biggest differentiators for Nokia in the Windows Phone world is Nokia Music. The company has had a couple of music offerings in the past, but Nokia Music really seems to nail it – it's a radio-based Mix Radio service offering you choice of 100 channels varying by genre.

Most importantly, it's hassle-free – unlike other major services, Nokia Music doesn't ask you to register somewhere, nor does it require you to pay for listening to music. How does the Nokia Lumia 800 fare against the other Windows Phone devices: spec comparison

We've just looked at how the Nokia Lumia 800 against the other Android and iOS heavyweights, but while in those lands the race is not so tightly regulated, in Windows Phone world everyone has to conform with Microsoft's rules about hardware. That doesn't completely exclude variety but admittedly makes the devices look pretty much similar. In return, you're sure that whichever device you pick at the store, you can expect the same smooth WP Mango experience.

That's why differentiation is extremely hard to achieve in the WP world – the tablet below should prove this pretty convincingly. We've picked three other top-tier devices on the platform – the Samsung Omnia W, the HTC Titan and the HTC Radar. The Titan certainly looks like the neighbourhood bully in their company – with its humongous 4.7-inch display it literally dwarfs its rivals.

But we should also pay attention to the benefits coming with Nokia WP devices – Nokia Drive gives you free navigation and Nokia Music is unique in the way it allows you to pick music. Nokia Sabre pictured for posterity, could appear at Nokia World

While the Nokia SeaRay will be displayed next week at Nokia World, it looks like it won't be the only Windows Phone Mango flavored smartphone that the Finnish based manufacturer will show off at the conference. A leaked photo of a prototype of the Nokia Sabre has been obtained by Pocketnow.

The device is expected to have a 1.4GHz processor under the hood, along with 1GB of RAM. The WVGA display measures 3.5 inches and there is a 5MP camera on back. Pocketnow's source says to expect the device to sell for $410-$480. Oh, if you're concerned that the device doesn't show the three typical buttons for Windows Phone devices, well you can chalk that up to the person taking the picture who apparently has been taking lessons from Mr. Blurrycam.

While it would seem that Nokia will possibly have a pair of Windows Phone Mango devices to display at Nokia World, there actually could be more. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says that Nokia will show off a "bunch" of phones at the conference using Microsoft's mobile OS while Andy Lees, president of Microsoft's Windows Phone Division, says to expect a "wide range" of handsets from Nokia.

Nokia win unveil its first Windows Phone smartphones next week, at Nokia World which takes place in London on the 25th of October, we have already seen a leaked image of the device and now we have some more photos and details.

We heard yesterday that Nokia will unveil multiple Windows Phone devices next week, and now we have our first photos of the Nokia 800, which as you can see from the photos bears a similar design to the Nokia N9. According to the guys from Pocket Now, the Nokia 800 will be available in three different colors, black, blue and pink, and it will feature a 3.7 inch multi-touch touchscreen display and will come with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. We should have some official details from Nokia next week, and there is a rumor that the Nokia 800 could go on sale as early as the 15th of November.

Nokia launches Oro smartphone with gold and leather - and a lofty pricetag

Nokia has just introduced a new smartphone called the Oro, based on the existing C7, but with an added touch of luxury. Nokia has a tradition of producing expensive, high-end luxury phones with its Vertu brand, but the Oro is branded Nokia through and through. It features 18-carat gold plating, hand-wrapped leather, and a sapphire crystal on the home key. The sapphire crystal is said to offer beauty and greater durability when compared with traditional glass.

Technology-wise, the Oro has the same guts as the C7, so you will find a pentaband 3G radio, a 3.5-inch AMOLED display, and an 8 megapixel camera with flash, but no autofocus. All the gold and leather in the world will not make that lens autofocus, unfortunately. Unlike the C7, the Oro will ship with the latest version of Symbian, dubbed Anna.

The Oro will be available in limited quantities in Europe, Eastern Europe, China, and the Middle East in the third quarter of this year. It will cost upwards of 800 EUR (US$1125), but if you have to ask the cost...you know the rest. And in case you were wondering, Oro means gold in Italian. Nokia 701 Symbian Belle smartphone has brightest display in the world

The second of Nokia's new smartphones to launch with Symbian Belle, the Nokia 701 features the brightest screen in the world according to the Finnish phone maker. Additionally, it sports a plethora of wireless connections and a fast processor. Cutting to the chase, the 3.5-inch, IPS LCD with ClearBlack technology has the most NITs (a rating for brightness) of any smartphone display in the world. The display features Nokia's common nHD (360 x 640 pixel) resolution. The extra brightness should make it easier to see the display in direct sunlight, and the IPS features should provide great viewing angles. It also features Corning Gorilla Glass for added durability.

Dimensionally, the 701 is larger than its 700 brother, as it measures 117.2mm x 56.8mm x 11mm (4.61in x 2.24in x 0.43in) and weighs 131g (4.62oz). It is powered by a 1GHz processor, and has 8GB of internal storage. A microSD card slot supports cards up to 32GB in capacity. In addition to the processor is a new graphics co-processor that has faster speed and four times the memory of older Nokia graphics chips. The 701 sports a pentaband cellular radio with HSUPA 3G, plus Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, and an FM radio. An 8 megapixel "full focus" camera with LED flash is found on the rear, and a secondary front-facing camera is available for video calls. The 701 is capable of recording 720p (1280 x 720 pixel) HD video, too. A 1300mAh battery provides up to 17 hours of talk time or almost 23 days of standby.

Nokia launches the 700 with Symbian Belle, says its the smallest smartphone in the world

To go along with the announcement of the new Symbian Belle operating system, Nokia has launched some new smartphones that make use of it. The Nokia 700 is said to be the smallest slate-style smartphone on the market, yet it still has some of the higher-end specs that one would expect to see on a larger smartphone.

The diminutive 700 measures only 110mm x 50.7mm x 9.7mm (4.3in x 2in x 0.38in) and weighs a scant 96g (3.39oz). It is powered by a 1GHz processor and has GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi support, plus an FM radio. It has a 5 megapixel "full focus" camera with LED flash and 720p (1280 x 720 pixel) HD video capture, and comes equipped with 2GB of internal memory to store your images. You can expand the memory with microSD cards up to 32GB in capacity. The Nokia 700 sports a pentaband cellular radio, and its 1080mAh battery is claimed to offer 7 hours of talk time or over 19 days of standby time.

The 3.2-inch display on the 700 is a ClearBlack AMOLED unit, with nHD (360 x 640 pixel) resolution and Corning Gorilla Glass. The 700 also features deep NFC capabilities, thanks to the Symbian Belle operating system. Nokia claims that the 700 is the greenest smartphone that it has produced to date, as it is free of PVC, RFR, and BFR, and is 100 percent recyclable. The Nokia 700 will come in cool grey, silver/white, coral red, peacock blue, and purple color options, and will arrive in the third quarter.
