Could This Be The Nokia Lumia 900?

Look what just popped up in our mailbox. At first glance it looks just like the Nokia Lumia 800, but there are subtle clues that it is a different devices such as the lower-set capacitive keys. If this is indeed the Nokia Lumia 900 it would explain why rumours of a Lumia 800 with LTE going round, given the close resemblance between the devices. It is striking however that there is no clear front-facing camera, but there is a circular area in the top left corner which may still conceal this.

The Nokia 900 is a rumoured Windows Phone with a 4.3” ClearBlack AMOLED screen, HSPA+ data speeds, and a 1.4 GHz single-core processor. It is rumoured to have an 8-megapixel rear camera and 16 GB or 32 GB of storage. Front-facing camera and gyro sensor is currently unknown. It is rumored to be released Q1 2012 on AT&T. Other country release dates are currently unknown.

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 Press Shot Leaked

T-Mobile and Nokia are holding a press conference this week where the two companies are expected to reveal the first Nokia Windows Phone devices for T-Mobile, we have already seen evidence of a T-Mobile branded Nokia Lumia 710, and now we have an actual press shot of the device. The T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 press shot was obtained by the guys from Pocket Now, and is more evidence that this will be one of the devices announced this week, especially considering that Nokia recently announced it would be available globally within the next few weeks.

It isn’t clear as yet whether this will be the only Nokia Windows Phone unveiled for T-Mobile this week, we wonder if we will see some new Nokia Windows Phone devices or maybe the Lumia 800 on T-Mobile.

Nokia Lumia 710 Shipping, T-Mobile To Receive It, Marketplace Piracy & More:

Nokia Lumia 800 is starting to get its vey first firmware update

Following through on a promise made back towards the end of last month, the first firmware update for the Nokia Lumia 800 is starting to roll out as we speak – bringing along some much needed fixes and tweaks to improve the high status Windows Phone.

So far, the update is being pushed out in countries where the handset is made available, and carries along quite a few performance and usability enhancements. However, it’s not clearly known if it directly addresses the handset’s power efficiency, which has plagued some owners with erratic battery life. Instead, the changelog for the firmware update mentions it offering the following:

Charging improvements
Voicemail notification improvement
Replying to mail improved for Microsoft Exchange 2003 users
Improved display switching in bright light
Improved audio quality

Of course, it’s better to have some things than nothing at all, but as it stands, it’s being sent out in waves – being rolled out over the course of the next two weeks actually. Looking ahead, there is word that another update will be made available in early 2010 to offer additional enhancements to the software.

Nokia Lumia 800 Unboxing:

Future Nokia Windows Phones To Come With ST-Ericsson Chips

It looks like Nokia has decided to use another manufacturer as well as Qualcomm for its Nokia Windows Phone devices, as ST-Ericsson has announced a partnership with Nokia for future Windows Phone smartphones. Some of Nokia’s future Windows Phone devices will use ST Ericsson’s NovaThor platform which consists of dual core processors, there are three chips in the platform at the moment, the U8500, U5500 and the flagship U9500.

“We are pleased to have been selected by Nokia as a key partner for Windows smartphones, in line with our goal to be present in all segments and major operating systems,” said Gilles Delfassy, president and CEO of ST-Ericsson. “Our NovaThor platforms continue to gain traction as they enable customers to bring great smartphones to the market.”

We can probably expect to see the first Nokia Windows Phone devices using ST-Ericsson’s dual core platform launch some time next year.

ST-Ericsson scores a contract to end Qualcomm's chipset exclusivity on Nokia Windows Phones

ST-Ericsson scores a contract to end Qualcomm's chipset exclusivity on Nokia Windows Phones
ST-Ericsson (not to be confused with Sony Ericsson) just bragged via an official press release that it has scored orders for its ARM-based NovaThor chipsets from Nokia for the Windows Phone portfolio of the Finns.

It's apparent now that Microsoft is giving Nokia more wiggle room than to other WP manufacturers, since Qualcomm was the exclusive chipset provider until now. ST-Ericsson is the other mobile silicon maker besides Qualcomm, which integrates the baseband radio in their chipsets, making for a complete SoC.

Nokia has long held a relationship with the company, whose chips are found in many handset of the world's largest phone maker by volume, so it feels like a natural extension of the partnership. Granted, this might be geared towards invading the emerging markets, especially China, where ST-Ericsson provides chips with TD-SCDMA basebands, like on the dual-core HTC Sensation Z710t for China Mobile, which uses ST-Ericsson's dual-core NovaThor chipset.

We are pleased to announce that Nokia has selected ST-Ericsson as a supplier for future devices it plans to introduce based on Windows Phone OS. ST-Ericsson’s selection by Nokia as a key partner for Windows smartphones confirms our company strategy to be present in all segments and its capability to port all major operating systems.

Today’s announcement also highlights the traction that our NovaThor platforms are beginning to get as ST-Ericsson continues to gain in the market, enabling our customers to bring great smartphones to the market.

NovaThor is offered in many flavors, including with combined LTE/HSPA+/TD-SCDMA modems, it uses ARM-Mali 400 GPU, like Samsung's Exynos, and supports the usual goodies such as 1080p video encoding and decoding, 3D imagery capture support, and as far as we grasped from the white papers, is more power-efficient than NVIDIA's Cortex-A9 offering, for instance. It's probably safe to assume that ST-Ericsson will be mainly powering low- to mid-range Nokia Windows Phones, most probably for Chinese market, but still, it's nice to have options.

Nokia axes plans for the 600

Nokia axes plans for the 600

Nokia has abruptly decided to cancel all plans for the unreleased Symbian Belle powered 600 saying that they have decided not to ship it to markets after careful consideration.

The Nokia 600 appeared to be a mid-range offering set to launch as an alternative to the Finnish manufacturers upcoming Windows Phone devices. The 600 features a 3.2-inch capacitive display and is powered by a single-core 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. Around the back of the smartphone is a 5 megapixel camera that can record video in 720p HD. However, now that it has been cancelled even before it’s never seen the light of day that camera will never be put to use.

In a statement issued by Nokia in regards to the cancellation of the 600 this is what they had to say:

After careful consideration we have decided not to ship the Nokia 600 to markets, we are constantly continuing to refine our portfolio to bring consumers the best possible range of devices to meet their diverse needs.

The axing of the Nokia 600 comes only a week after they pulled the covers off of the Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 Windows Phone handsets. Nokia wasn’t clear if the overall response of the two new devices led to the 600’s unfortunate demise. Nokia appears ready to go all in with Windows Phone and might even make Symbian a thing of the past. Tell us what you think.

Mystery solved - Nokia Maps will appear for other Windows Phones, but without free voice navigation

Mystery solved - Nokia Maps will appear for other Windows Phones, but without free voice navigation
That mysterious Nokia Maps app that appeared on the Windows Phone Marketplace not long ago? It turns out that it will indeed be available for download on other Windows Phones than Nokia's Lumia line, and in the coming weeks to boot. Thus Nokia is making good on its promise to make the fruits of its multibillion NAVTEQ acquisition for free to other WP manufacturers in order to help boost the ecosystem.

The catch? It won't feature the free voice-guided offline navigation that Nokia is keeping exclusively for its Lumia line, like the 800 and 710 phones, in the form of a preinstalled app called Drive. Nokia Maps for Windows Phone will feature local POI details (address, phone number, reviews, and photos of up to 25 locations in your vicinity), deep link support, where you can pin destinations to the Start screen, and detailed maps in satellite, 2D, and 3D views (where available).

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that Nokia wants to keep its main differentiator in the Windows Phone world for itself, but Nokia Maps is also a pretty useful piece of software, which will benefit others for free, so no complaints. The best part is that it covers most countries worldwide, so it can fill the huge blank spots that Bing Maps leaves behind.

Nokia Lumia 800 invades The X Factor

Nokia Lumia 800 invades The X Factor
During the NokiaWorld keynote, CEO Stephen Elop announced that Nokia wants to target its new phones at 25 year-olds and “the 25 year-olds in all of us”. As part of that strategy Nokia has announced that the Lumia 800 will be the official phone of the hit UK TV show The X Factor.

As part of the sponsorship each finalist was given their own Lumia 800. The delighted responses of the contestants, along with several montages of footage shot by the contestants on their new phones have been made available on the official X Factor website.

The move to target a younger audience is part of Nokia’s attempt to overhaul their brand image, which Elop characterized as “reliable old Nokia” to something more dynamic and fun, which Nokia is dubbing “aspirational youth”. While their youth-oriented marketing will cover both the Windows Phone 7 equipped Lumia series and the Series 40 based Asha handsets, they particularly want to capitalize on the “fun factor” of using the Live Tiles of Windows Phone 7.

Nokia’s brand has suffered the last couple years as their Symbian platform consistently lost market share to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android mobile operating systems. While it is far too soon to know whether their brand rehabilitation will help them regain their place among the pantheon of smartphone manufacturers, it’s clear that the UK finalists of The X Factor are thrilled with their new phones.

Nokia Shows Off Flexible Smartphone Prototype

We got to see the first Windows Phone smartphones from Nokia, the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710, but not it would appear that Nokia has been showing off something much for interesting at Nokia World 2011, a Flexible smartphone prototype.

The guys from Cnet spotted the flexible smartphone prototype at Nokia World, and you can see it in action in the video below, and Nokia calls it the Nokia Kinetic Device. It certainly looks very interesting from the video, the way the menus and on screen content can be changed by flexing the device.

Nokia's flexible user interface prototype demo:

Nokia Develops Bendable Screens

ricNokia Develops Bendable Screens
Nokia unveiled flexible Kinetic phone prototypes with bendable screens, attempting to wow users with a fun and innovative new device.

Attendees at today's 2011 Nokia World Conference in London got to try out futuristic flex-phones, which let users navigate by bending and twisting the screen to scroll through options and zoom in and out. The Kinetic phones drew smiles and interest from passers-by, who described the elastic phones as "revolutionary" and "mind-blowing."

The devices aren't expected to be on the market anytime soon, since there is no platform integration on them yet and they are currently powered by a hidden computer, but their innovative designs show Nokia continues to be a forward-thinking company.

Nokia is a pioneer when it comes to novel devices that perform unique tasks. Some of their recent creations stand up for incoming calls, for instance, and others use body heat to charge their batteries. The features are fun for people to play with, but may also eventually have practical advantages.

The ability to charge a phone battery with body heat, for example, may come in handy in parts of the world where electricity is spotty, or during a power outage. A flexible screen may make a phone more durable and prevent breakage.

Despite Nokia's crowd-pleasing bendable phones, however, the primary attraction at the London conference is the company's new line of Windows smartphones. Nokia aims to bring itself out of a sales slump with their launch, hoping to regain its place alongside Apple and Google in the market it once dominated through innovative hardware acumen and design.

Nokia's Lumia Windows Phones – was it worth the wait?

Nokia's Lumia Windows Phones – was it worth the wait?
No, it wasn't! Okay, okay, we're just kidding here. It's been quite a bit of a wait since Nokia announced that it's adopting Windows Phone as its main platform back in February, but we've finally been treated to the very first fruits of this new partnership. At Nokia World 2011 this week, the still largest cell phone manufacturer by volume in the world introduced its first Windows Phone-based smartphones, namely the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710. Thankfully, the more interesting of the two, the Lumia 800, will start shipping as soon as next month, but after all the waiting to see an actual device, we can't help but wonder – are the Lumia Windows Phones good enough to help Nokia reestablish its brand as a premium phone manufacturer in today's landscape?

First of all, we should note that the announcement event was very interesting, one of the most impressive ones we've seen recently. It's obvious that the people in charge of preparations have given it a lot of thought – all speakers were flawless, while a number of surprises managed to really excite the spirits in the hall – like, for example, the unexpected video link with a Finnish Nokia factory, where they showed how they package a Nokia Lumia 800 and ready it for shipment. And it seems all of this fuss wasn't in vain, as the new Nokia handsets do look pretty nice, especially the Lumia 800 and its fancy design. However, now that the dust has settled, we want to think about how relevant the new products are, and whether or not the wait was worth it.

Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports: the attempt to bring exclusivity for Nokia Windows Phones

Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports: the attempt to bring exclusivity for Nokia Windows Phones
Nokia must have really been between the rock and the hard place when it announced it will adopt Windows Phone as its primary mobile platform. One of the justifications for the eye-popping decision back in February was pointed out as Android not offering ways for Nokia to differentiate its handsets among the sea of phones powered by the green robot.

Well, it's not that easy to differentiate in the Windows Phone ecosystem either - the chassis specs are predefined by Microsoft, and Redmond keeps a tight grip over the uniformity of the interface. Still, the Finns managed to pull ahead with some exclusive features that will be available only on Nokia Windows Phones.

Nokia Purity headsets unveiled: Monster-powered, colorful music

Nokia Purity headsets unveiled: Monster-powered, colorful music
Nokia World is mostly about new phones, but not only about them – Nokia Purity was also announced and the colorful series of headsets caught our eye with their design first. Produced in cooperation with Monster, they also promise top notch audio quality.

"Both products provide a fresh listening experience and are the first output of the exclusive long-term partnership between Nokia and Monster, intended to introduce a range of premium audio accessories to reflect the outstanding quality and bold style of the Lumia range," Nokia said.

The Purity HD Stereo Headset is the first, over-ear model. The headset weighs 6.35 oz (180 grams) and is specifically designed to work with Lumia handsets, but it seems that it's the matching colors between the Lumia phones and the Purity HD that this is limited to. You connect the headset via a standard 3.5mm jack.
