Nokia Ace Likely To Be Shown At CES

The rumored Nokia Lumia 900 (aka Nokia Ace) Windows Phone 7 smart phone. We said that it would basically be the Nokia Lumia 800 only a bit bigger and featuring a LTE modem. The Nokia Lumia 900 is now official and the speculation seems to be correct.

The new smart phone made it debut today at a Nokia CES 2012 press conference. An AT&T exclusive, the phone features a cyan blue polycarbonate shell, 4.3" AMOLED screen with 800 x 480 resolution, 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM, 8 Megapixel rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics (stated 28mm, f/2.2) and dual LED flash, front facing camera, LTE 4G modem, and a rather spacious 1840mAH battery. Sporting the Windows Phone 7 operating system, the phone has a rated seven hours of talk time and 300 hours of standby time.

It will be available in either cyan or black colors in the US within the next few months and bound to the AT&T network with "aggressive" pricing. Nokia stated in their conference that it has been working closely with Qualcomm to ensure solid performance on AT&T's LTE network. SIM-free and carrier unlocked phones will also be available; however, it is not clear whether users in the US will be able to purchase them (or if they would need to be imported). Ballmer stated plainly that the "Lumia 900 is a very exciting launch," and that AT&T is critical to the WP7 future.

T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710 Discovered At the FCC

We heard earlier today that Nokia and T-Mobile will hold a press conference next week, when the two companies are expected to announce T-Mobile’s new range of Nokia Windows Phone devices. We were expecting to see the Nokia Lumia 800 announced on T-Mobile next week, this may still happen, but we will most likely see the Nokia Lumia 710 announced for T-Mobile as the device has appeared at the FCC with T-Mobile branding.

It isn’t clear as yet on whether the Nokia Lumia 710 will be the only device that will be announced for T-Mobile next week.

Introduction:

Nokia, wow, it's been a journey and a half tracking all the highs and lows Nokia have encountered over the past few couple of years. Losing a monumental amount of smartphone market share and abandoning their prized Symbian in favor of Microsoft's new OS. On the plus, their decisiveness to move forward and even the strengths of their now abandoned MeeGo platform have to be commended. But we're not here to lament, no, lamenting is what we did when reviewing the Nokia N9. Now we are embracing change, embracing Windows Phone 7.5, embracing Stephen Elop's vision and embracing the Nokia Lumia 800. The Lumia 800 is currently not expected from any US carrier. It is somehow usable with AT&T's 3G network, supporting the 1900 MHz band but lacking the 850 MHz one.

Design:

With little in way of variance between the Nokia N9 and the Nokia Lumia 800, it's fair to say our over-riding impressions of both device aesthetics are similar, however if this was a competition, on physicality alone, the Nokia N9 would be the winner. Starting with the screen, unlike the Nokia N9's Full WVGA480x854 display, the lower end of the Nokia Lumia 800 is re-tasked to function as three capacitive buttons, sacrificing on resolution (now WVGA480x800) and making the display roughly 7% smaller at 3.7 inches. What you do still get is the bevel edged Gorilla Glass fascia atop Nokia's Clear Black AMOLED display. It looks beautiful, as if AMOLED displays were made with Windows Phone in mind, with Live Tiles gliding vertically below the bevels and above the deep black beneath. This is emphasized by how responsive the Lumia 800 is, coupled with the glass offering a rich, cool sensation to the touch. If we never saw the Nokia N9, we would have been none the wiser. The Nokia Lumia 800 has a beautiful display. As we have seen it however, we also know it's not the best that Nokia can do.

Overall, the hardware works beautifully with Windows Phone 7.5, from the AMOLED screen with its Clear Black technology, through to the flat bottom sitting atop your little finger for one handed use. We can't wait to see what Nokia brings us when they make a piece of hardware with Windows Phone in mind from conception. Nokia N9 comparisons aside however and the Nokia Lumia 800 is a standalone triumph.

Alright, it's not that simple, but the company's marketing team did make a concerted effort to find a moniker ending with a vowel sound. Nokia Lumia 800 Tops Sales Charts In France

It looks like the new Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone smartphone may already be a hit for Nokia, in France as least, as according to the Windows Phone Blog, the Nokia Lumia 800 has topped the sales charts in France for the first week with the retailer PhoneHouse, which is the Carphone Warehouse here in the UK.

It will be interesting to see how Nokia’s flagship Windows Phone smartphone does in other countries as well, as it will be available in the UK on the 16th of November. The Nokia Lumia 800 is Nokia’s first Windows Phone device and it features and it features a 3.7 inch AMOLED display, a single core 1.4GHz processor and an 8 megapixel camera and comes with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

Nokia To Bring Tethering To Lumia 800 Windows Phone

Nokia recently announced its first Windows Phone devices, the Nokia Lumia 710 and the Nokia Lumia 800, the Lumia 800 will go on sale in Europe later this month, and it looks like Nokia will be releasing a software update to add new features to their flagship Windows Phone.

According to the guys over at Win Rumors the update for the Nokia Lumia 800 will ad the ability for WiFi tethering, and you will be able to connect other devices to it, a feature which is available in other Windows 7.5 devices. “Microsoft takes very seriously meeting (and exceeding) the requirements outlined by agencies such as the FCC in the USA. They felt it was really important to fully address the concerns raised by recent FCC regulations before enabling this feature and are optimistic they can deliver on these requirements though a software update and are working diligently on that now. There are no details as yet.

Nokia Lumia 710 Full Specifications Revealed

Earlier,Nokia announced its first Windows Phone smartphones, the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710, and we now have the full specifications on the Nokia Lumia 710. The Nokia Lumia 710 will come with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and it features a 3.7 inch WVGA touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, processing is provided by a single core 1.4GHz processor and it also comes with 512MB of RAM and 8GB of built in storage.

The Lima 710 features a 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash and it is capable of recording HD video in 720p at 30 frames per second, there is also a 1,300 mAh battery and it comes with Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and a micro USB port. The Nokia Lumia 710 Windows Phone is expected to go on sale in early 2012 and will retail for around 270 Euros before taxes.

Nokia Lumia 800 Goes Up For Pre-Order In The UK

Nokia’s new flagship Windows Phone smartphone, the Nokia Lumia 800, which was announced earlier today has now gone up for pre-order in the UK, and is available from the Nokia website, with a couple of mobile carriers here in the UK which include Three and Vodafone.

It looks like the versions of the Nokia Lumia 800 available to pre-order from their website at the moment are ones with a contract, there are no details of the SIM free version as yet. Pricing seems to start at £199 on the cheapest monthly tariff, as soon as we get some more ifnformation on how much the SIM free version of the Nokia Lumia 800 will retail for in the UK we will let you guys know.

Nokia Shows Off Flexible Smartphone Prototype

We got to see the first Windows Phone smartphones from Nokia, the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710, but not it would appear that Nokia has been showing off something much for interesting at Nokia World 2011, a Flexible smartphone prototype.

The guys from Cnet spotted the flexible smartphone prototype at Nokia World, and you can see it in action in the video below, and Nokia calls it the Nokia Kinetic Device. It certainly looks very interesting from the video, the way the menus and on screen content can be changed by flexing the device.

Nokia Develops Bendable Screens

Nokia unveiled flexible Kinetic phone prototypes with bendable screens, attempting to wow users with a fun and innovative new device.

Attendees at today's 2011 Nokia World Conference in London got to try out futuristic flex-phones, which let users navigate by bending and twisting the screen to scroll through options and zoom in and out. The Kinetic phones drew smiles and interest from passers-by, who described the elastic phones as "revolutionary" and "mind-blowing."

The devices aren't expected to be on the market anytime soon, since there is no platform integration on them yet and they are currently powered by a hidden computer, but their innovative designs show Nokia continues to be a forward-thinking company.

Nokia is a pioneer when it comes to novel devices that perform unique tasks. Some of their recent creations stand up for incoming calls, for instance, and others use body heat to charge their batteries. The features are fun for people to play with, but may also eventually have practical advantages.

The ability to charge a phone battery with body heat, for example, may come in handy in parts of the world where electricity is spotty, or during a power outage. A flexible screen may make a phone more durable and prevent breakage.

Despite Nokia's crowd-pleasing bendable phones, however, the primary attraction at the London conference is the company's new line of Windows smartphones. Nokia aims to bring itself out of a sales slump with their launch, hoping to regain its place alongside Apple and Google in the market it once dominated through innovative hardware acumen and design.

Nokia's Lumia Windows Phones – was it worth the wait?

No, it wasn't! Okay, okay, we're just kidding here. It's been quite a bit of a wait since Nokia announced that it's adopting Windows Phone as its main platform back in February, but we've finally been treated to the very first fruits of this new partnership. At Nokia World 2011 this week, the still largest cell phone manufacturer by volume in the world introduced its first Windows Phone-based smartphones, namely the Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710. Thankfully, the more interesting of the two, the Lumia 800, will start shipping as soon as next month, but after all the waiting to see an actual device, we can't help but wonder – are the Lumia Windows Phones good enough to help Nokia reestablish its brand as a premium phone manufacturer in today's landscape?

First of all, we should note that the announcement event was very interesting, one of the most impressive ones we've seen recently. It's obvious that the people in charge of preparations have given it a lot of thought – all speakers were flawless, while a number of surprises managed to really excite the spirits in the hall – like, for example, the unexpected video link with a Finnish Nokia factory, where they showed how they package a Nokia Lumia 800 and ready it for shipment. Is The Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone Headed To The US?

Nokia announced their first Windows Phone smartphones, and the one that everyone is interested in is the new Nokia Lumia 800, which shares a similar design to the Nokia N9. When Nokia announced the Lumia 800 it said it would be available in Europe next month, but Nokia didn’t mention anything specific about a US launch of the Lumia 800.

What Nokia said in the announcement was that they would bring Nokia Windows devices to the US in 2012, without mentioning any specific models. The guys over at Gizmodo spoke to Keith Nowak from Nokia and he was unable to confirm whether the Nokia Lumia 800 would land in the US. What he did say was that Nokia will launch its first Windows Phone smartphones in the US in 2012 with one mobile carrier, although details of specific models seem to be a bit thin on the ground. Could Nokia be planning to release a different Windows Phone smartphone in the US? Lets hope that Nokia decides to release the Lumia 800 in the US in 2012.

Nokia Lumia 800 Presentation and Hands On:

Nokia preparing a QWERTY Series 40 handset, is it the Nokia 303?

One more thing leaked out just before the Stephen Elop's opening keynote at Nokia World – a QWERTY Series 40 device, which could be one of the more affordable devices introduced at the event. One of the pictures is pretty large and you can clearly see a red QWERTY handset advertised with “You. Me. Everyone. Let's QWERTY.”

Now, this could be the Nokia 303, which was rumored to run on Series 40 6th Edition and be of the Touch and Type variety of hybrid devices. The device also looks like it's coming with both Wi-Fi and 3G support.

If you take a closer look at the pictures below you'd also notice some other boxes, but those required more than a magnifying glass to decipher and we'd rather wait for the event to see what they contain.

How does the Nokia Lumia 800 fare against the other Windows Phone devices: spec comparison

We've just looked at how the Nokia Lumia 800 against the other Android and iOS heavyweights, but while in those lands the race is not so tightly regulated, in Windows Phone world everyone has to conform with Microsoft's rules about hardware. That doesn't completely exclude variety but admittedly makes the devices look pretty much similar. In return, you're sure that whichever device you pick at the store, you can expect the same smooth WP Mango experience.

That's why differentiation is extremely hard to achieve in the WP world – the tablet below should prove this pretty convincingly. We've picked three other top-tier devices on the platform – the Samsung Omnia W, the HTC Titan and the HTC Radar. The Titan certainly looks like the neighbourhood bully in their company – with its humongous 4.7-inch display it literally dwarfs its rivals.

But we should also pay attention to the benefits coming with Nokia WP devices – Nokia Drive gives you free navigation and Nokia Music is unique in the way it allows you to pick music. But what about the rest of the specs? Look at the nearly identical sheets and let us know if you think that might be a problem for any particular WP phone maker.

Nokia Maps now offers offline capabilities and public transport routes for Android and iOS users

Ever since Google Maps hit version 5.0, users have been able to precache a larger area of their route for offline navigation. While it's no substitute for free offline voice-guided services like Nokia Maps, it has been a good way to keep your data consumption down by downloading the area via Wi-Fi before you head somewhere.

Now the online mobile edition of Nokia Maps is offering the same feature for both Android and iOS users. Just head to the Nokia Maps mobile website, and the HTML 5 service allows you to download a preselected neighborhood for offline usage, then turn off data and head on your merry way, but you still have to get reconnected if you want to do reroutes or searches. The HTML 5 online version also lists POIs with descriptions, as well as public transport routes and live traffic in selected cities and countries.

Nokia World 2011 kicks off tomorrow: what to expect

Nokia’s big two days are right around the corner - after probably the lengthiest and most turbulent wait in the industry, the world’s biggest smartphone maker is expected to make its equally big Windows Phone statement. What should we expect?

First of all, let’s say that Nokia World is the company’s single biggest yearly event. It’s held in London and this year it opens with CEO Stephen Elop’s keynote scheduled for 9:30 am GMT | 4:30 am EST | 1:30 am PST on Wednesday, October 26th. It will be a long night for those who want to follow it live from the States, but Elop promises it will be worthit.

Most importantly, there are a couple of devices to be announced and that’s what everyone is looking for.

The first one has leaked on numerous occasions, so it will almost be a surprise for us if we don’t actually see it. Yes, we’re talking about that Nokia Sea Ray prototype, which Elop hismelf showed around the N9 announcement in a supposedly leaked video. The Nokia Sea Ray, also referred to as the Nokia 800, doesn’t look new - actually it’s an almost exact copy of the Nokia N9 with its pillow-shaped convex screen and polycarbonate body. What’s under the hood, though, might differ and also the screen on the Sea Ray is projected to be a smaller, 3.7” AMOLED.

Secondly, the Nokia Sabre has also appeared in rumors and it seems to be a slightly smaller device, while the Nokia Ace is the third and possibly most well specced Nokia Windows Phone. The Ace is expected with a 4.3” display, while everything else seems to have remained a secret.

In addition, there will be a huge Microsoft presence at Nokia World this year. Expect Office-related news as Redmond's corporate VP of Office Communications, William Kennedy, has an on-stage appearance. Joe Belfiore, the corporate VP of Windows Phone, is also listed, as are WP engineering head Terry Myerson and WP Marketing VP Achim Berg.

The agenda of the event is public, so you can check it out in full detail when you hit the source link below, but we'd also mention that Nokia will pay special attention to how it can attract the next billion phone users, how development under WP will be handled and finally what it can offer in the entertainment department. Nokia 800 teaser hits UK's TV channels one second at a time

With barely three days left until Nokia World kicks off in London, a series of one second long teasers has hit the TV channels in the UK, showcasing some of the design highlights in the upcoming Nokia 800.

The teasers are very much in line with the previously leaked, disco/metro UI themed promo images of the Windows Phone running smartphone. You can see them put together in a single video clip below.

With the press shots of the Nokia 800 out in the wild as well, all we are left to do, is wait for the official announcement in the next few days.
