iPhone's Stock Weather, Compass, Calculator, Clock, Stocks And Voice Memo Apps To iPad

If you are a new owner of an iPad 2 then you have probably been shocked to find that some of the key stock applications are not there when you turn it on. These are all natively installed on the iPhone and the iPod Touch. You may have spent some time searching for these items on your new iPad but Apple has decided that it is not necessary to have the likes of Weather, Calculator, Voice Memo, Compass and clock on the iPad.

If you want these apps then all is not lost and the jailbreak community is here to the rescue. Ryan Petrich who is an iOS developer has produced his latest iPad enhancement which brings these native applications to the iPad's springboard. This tweak is called Belfry and it has been released into the BigBoss repository free of charge. It is available to download for all jailbroken iPads. Installing this tweak will add six additional icons to the SpringBoard and you can launch them as normal apps just the same as the iPhone.

This is something that has been talked about for quite some time with the jailbreak community and if you intend to download Belfry make sure you read the information in Cydia first. Belfry is only available for iPads runnign iOS 5 or higher and users will definitely experience some visual anomalies after the iPad has rebooted. There may be some graphical errors when running these apps and this is due to the way the iPad handles the running of native iPhone applications. This can be partially rectified by installing a tweak called RetinaPad along with Belfry which will render the applications in full screen mode in the best possible way for the iPad. In order to use Belfry you will need to jailbreak your iPad and you can jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe.

Official Facebook App for iPad Now Available for Download in App Store

After more than a year of endless rumors and speculation and one and half years after the Cupertino, California-based Apple released their uber popular second gen tablet PC, the Palo Alto, California company Facebook has finally released the much anticipated Facebook app for the iPad (iPhone and iPod Touch). Though you can download the Facebook app from the App Store since day one, the new Facebook is a special app as it is reported that it was designed specifically Apple’s 9.7 inch tablet PC. The new Facebook app is available for free download as a universal app in the iTunes App Store.

That said, the new Facebook app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch is definitely worth using in comparison to the browser version of Facebook. Unlike the introductory version f the of the Facebook app, one of the notable additions of the new Facebook app is it has all the features of the desktop version of the Facebook – optimized for tablet and smartphones. Meaning, you can now enjoy playing your favorite games and accessing your apps. And navigating from one page to another is a lot easier with the new Facebook app.

The new Facebook app has a new users interface; the news feed is displayed full screen in portrait mode, and if you are on landscape mode you can view the news feed as well as your Facebook friends who are available for online chatting. And tapping on your Facebook friends who are available online will open a small chat window where you can use the full landscape keyboard to chat with your contacts.

You can check some of the bullet points posted below for the new features of the Facebook app:

1) Enjoy bigger, better photos: Your photos take on new life on the iPad. They’re big, high-res and easy to flip through—like a real photo album.

2) Focus on what matters: With less on the screen, it’s easier to zoom in on your friends’ photos, updates and stories.

3) Navigate anywhere, fast: Just tap, slide or pinch to get from one screen to another and back again in no time.

4) Never lose your place: Use simplified navigation to send a message, see your notifications or browse your bookmarks without switching screens.

5) Play games on the go: Play your favorite Facebook games wherever you are, and on a bigger screen.

6) Tap to send messages: A simple dropdown menu makes it easy to scan and send messages without visiting your inbox.

Aside from these new changes and improvements, the social networking giant has also managed to improve the searching and browsing to the Facebook app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, which includes ability to play Facebook games and access apps, improved navigation, much organized interface, ability to search for people, apps, pages, etc, and best of all, intensified security features. You can download Facebook app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch using this iTunes link. It requires iOs device running on iOS 3.0 or later.

We have some good news for the entire iOS jailbreaking community, a new iOS jailbreak has been released to the general public that has capability to jailbreak the iOS 5.0 as well as the iOS 5.0.1 firmware that runs on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The name of this new iPhone / iPad jailbreak tool is Ac1dSn0w.

Folks over at the Pwn Dev Team have released the first beta version of Ac1dSn0w which is available for Mac OS X users only. And just like the iPhone Dev Team’s Redsn0w 0.9.9 and iH8sn0w’s Sn0wbreeze jailbreak tool, the new Ac1dSn0w jailbreak tool is compatible for the users of iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod Touch 4G running on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 firmware. In addition to these, you should also be noted that Ac1dSn0w offers tethered jailbreak only. Anyway, you can check the tutorial posted below on how to jailbreak iOS 5 / iOS 5.0.1 using Ac1dSn0w beta 1 jailbreak tool:

Steps to Jailbreak iOS 5 / iOS 5.0.1 iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch using Ac1dSn0w:
Step 1: First, you will need to download Ac1dSn0w jailbreak tool for Mac OS X using this link (link removed due to copyright issues).
Step 2: After downloading, launch the application and then connect your iPad 1, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G into your Mac via USB cable.
Note: You can click on “Show Console” in order to see some device related information. This option will also show you the current status of the jailbreaking procedures. On the other hand, the assistant panel will assist you in putting your iOS device in Pwned DFU / DFU mode.

You can check Pwn Dev Team official website to know more about Ac1dSn0w jailbreak tool.

Update:
MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team advised iOS jailbreakers to STAY AWAY from this tool as it contains copyright Apple code.

Unfortunately they achieve this by directly embedding Apple code in their program (15 times!). That’s the kind of copyright infringement we stay away from. Hosting this app can lead to DMCA takedowns, etc. (Anyhow, redsn0w doesn’t need the IPSW for each tethered boot either..it fetches the images from Apple’s servers once and then caches them.).

Jailbreaking Defined:
People who are not open to the “exclusivity” idea found ways to free their phones. That’s when Jailbreaking came to be. Jailbreaking is a process that enables a device to run code, meaning programs or system modification that hasn't been sanctioned by Apple. A jailbroken iPhone for example, will allow its user to download many extensions and themes previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia.

Jailbreaking became so popular that the Copyright Office legalized it last July allowing all iPhone users to gain full and better control of their phones, reiterating that: “When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses.”
Features of iOS 4.0.1 and 4.0.2:
The iOS 4.0.1 software update didn’t offer new features. Its main purpose was to address the flaw on the number of bars displayed by the iPhone 4 as a consequence of the “deathgrip” problem.
Apple said that an incorrect formula was used and this resulted to an incorrect display of the iPhone’s true signal strength. Due to this flaw, users in low reception areas see more 4 or 5 signal bars when it should be less.

The iOS 4.0.2, on the other hand, was also released to address a security problem found on iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1 created by JailbreakMe, a web-based jailbreaking tool for iDevices that is downloaded into the iOS device through a PDF file. JailbreakMe attacks a hole in the iOS making your iDevices vulnerable to hacking and malware installation.

The iOS 4.0.2 software update has now addressed and patched this vulnerability issue and has provided improvements to Multitasking and fast app switching. It also brought over 100 new features to the iPhone like folders, better mail, iBooks, Home screen wallpaper, and wireless keyboard support among others.

New 7.85 Inch iPad To Hit Shops In 2012

According to reports, Apple is preparing a 7.85 inch iPad for launch in late 2012 to cash in on the markets demands for smaller tablets. DigiTimes is where this report comes from and they are citing that source in the supply chain claim that Apple is looking to launch a smaller iPad that will be released next year.

Here’s an extract from the report:

Apple is likely to launch a 7.85-inch iPad prior to the fourth quarter of 2012 in addition to a new iPad scheduled to be released at the end of the first quarter, according to sources in the supply chain. The first point in the report about a smaller iPad has to be discussed.

Here is what Steve Jobs said in October 2010:

“7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad,” said Jobs, adding that competing manufacturers were struggling to meet the price point of the iPad, which starts at $500.

“These are among the reasons that the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA — dead on arrival,” Jobs said.

What this leads to is a question as to whether Tim Cook will go against Steve Jobs. This is highly unlikely as Steve Jobs’ beliefs in design are the same as his entire company’s beliefs in design. The Apple designers did their homework on tablet display sizes and decided on a 9.7” display back in 2010 and it is highly unlikely that they will change this just to meet market demand.

The claim that two iPads will be released in 2012 is also highly unlikely. The iPad sells really well based on the experience it offers not on the specifications it has under the hood. We really don’t believe that Apple will introduce an iPad with a smaller display but as with all rumors and stories that appear there is no evidence until an official statement is released from Apple.
