Popular webOS Twitter app Carbon coming to Windows Phone and Android

Without new webOS devices to sell apps for, App Catalog developers are turning to other platforms just like webOS users are doing with their phones. One app that is heading to Android and Windows Phone is Carbon. This is a third party Twitter app that has a pretty good following on webOS. The self proclaimed "Premium Twitter app" costs $2.99 on the HP App Catalog.

With the final beta of the app for Windows Phone already closed, an official launch of the app should take place soon. In fact, the company says it will make an an official announcement when it submits the app to the Windows Marketplace. As far as the Android Market is concerned, UX director Saleh Esmaeili tells Android Central that the app is in the design stage. Esmaeili said, "It was a little daunting when we first looked at Android SDKs and the lack of fluid UI design in the past, all changes with ICS. We can now benefit from animations and transitions along with lots of UI elements that can make designing a good experience possible on Android."

The director added that he is excited about Carbon joining the Android Market and will be on it "full steam". If you want to see what the excitement is all about, click on the video below for a sneak peek at the Windows Phone version of Carbon.

Android 4.0 ICS Ported To Droid RAZR

The latest Android device top get a port of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is the new Motorola Droid RAZR which went on sale last month, and although the Droid RAZR will be one of the first Android smartphones to get ICS, Android developer DroidTH3ory decided to port Android ICS to the device.

You can see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Droid RAZR in the video below, it is apparently still a work in progress and the ROM hasn’t been released as yet.

First Android store, Androidland, opens doors in Melbourne

Androidland, the first store dedicated solely to the Android experience, has opened doors in Melbourne, Australia, with the major participation of Australians telecom Telstra and with the backing of Google and major vendors. It’s been in the making since July, but opened for business just recently. The idea behind the store is to showcase and educate. It offers the full experience and even augments it with Gingerbread smells and other neat little touches like a big-screen Angry Birds gaming. Of course, it’s mostly about checking out the latest tablets and smartphones, to have that valuable hands-on experience, which could easen up a transition from another platform or a feature phone for users.

The store occupies 154 feet and is planned to be open in the next six months, and it could stay longer if customers accept it warm enough. But probably the most important thing about the store is the human factor with employees ready to explain and help with all things Android. Now, this is just an experimental project and we wouldn’t see it as nothing near the Apple Store level of customer support and retail, but it’s definitely an interesting venture.

Android app for purging your Facebook history is conveniently named Exfoliate

Android app for purging your Facebook history is conveniently named Exfoliate
As if to prove that we are to have an app for everything one day, Exfoliate for Facebook in Android Market is taking care of one dreaded question - how to get rid of the flattering or not entirely so Facebook history.

Zuckerberg's social network has the tendency to keep every little bit of personal info we divulge to it, and makes it hard to erase it, so an easy way to do it might be just what the doctor ordered.

The app can purge your comments, likes, posts and so on, not only on your Wall, but also whatever footprints you have left on other people's profiles. We can imagine such a cleansing exercise should come extremely handy if you are applying for a job right out of college, getting rid of all those beer pong tags and "gone wild" videos.

You can set Exfoliate to delete everything - photos, comments, likes, posts - from three years to three months back in time. The downside is that the app takes eons to complete all the scrubbing, so it's wise to use it for a few hours at home on your Wi-Fi network. It will be available for iOS users as well, and is now $2.99 on Android Market, which is a small price to pay for conveniently wiping your Facebook history, which nobody's going to look at more than three months back anyway, and start posting only serious stuff in time for that serious interview.

HTC Rezound arrives at the doorsteps of a few lucky buyers

Even though the HTC Rezound is to be launched officially on November 14, it looks like a few lucky buyers are already holding their new beast of a smartphone in their hands while others are expecting to get their unit delivered at some time tomorrow.

How could this be possible? Well, it turns out that if you give Verizon a call, order your Rezound over the phone and be fortunate enough to speak with “the right sales rep”, they should be more than willing to do business with you. Reportedly, overnight shipping is also an option, so if you manage to place an order before today is out, you might have a brand new HTC Rezound to play around with over the weekend.

Feel free to check the thread over at Android Forums at the source link below for all the spicy details. Of course, do not hesitate dropping a comment for us should you manage to order and HTC Rezound yourself.

“Indestructible” Motorola Defy ad defied by the ASA

Motorola has been handed another setback by the British Advertising Standards Agency. The victims this time were two ads promoting the Motorola Defy as “life proof”. The ads showed the phone dropped on floors, in pools, and generally abused during raucous night-life scenarios. Accompanying the ads were motion graphics announcing that the phone was “dance floor proof” and “pool party proof”.

Motorola also claimed that the phones were tested extensively, with phones dropped from a variety of heights onto a wide range of services. The Defy was put through an accelerated life testing program, with individual Defy units dropped as many as 25 times. During the testing phase Motorola advises that about 1.5% of the time the screen was damaged during a fall.

The ASA found that in general the ad would be viewed as advertising a phone that was damage-resistant rather than break-proof. They still asked for the ads to be pulled and revised, however, due to the specific height from which the phonies shown dropping in the ads. They said that Motorola did not provide specific evidence that the handset could regularly survive falls of the height depicted, and that in fact the data sent to the ASA showed that damage was a likely occurrence to the screen when dropped from a similar height.

Video shows off "Smart Actions" for Motorola DROID RAZR

Motorola's "Smart Actions" is a nice application that will make its debut on the Motorola DROID RAZR and there is no reason why it couldn't be part of an update to some of its other recent Android devices. What "Smart Actions" does is enable the phone's user to set up certain conditions and situations that would set off specific actions by the phone. Sure, you can probably find a similar app in the Android Market.

Thanks to the internal clock on the handset and the GPS, you can set your screen to lower the brightness by 20% at a certain time of day, or turn off the sound at a certain location. Not only can this function as a battery saver (increasing battery life by up to 30% according to Motorola) by turning on and off certain features at specific times or places, you can also use "Smart Actions" to make sure that your favorite website is up on the browser, refreshed and up to date when you get up in the morning. You can also set your phone not to ring while at a meeting. Motorola includes some preloaded and suggested rules to help get you started.

Apps pre-installed on the Motorola DROID RAZR can be hidden or removed

Verizon customers holding an upgrade have had a tough decision to make between the Motorola DROID RAZR and the Samsung GALAXY Nexus. One of the factors that Big Red customers were using to decide between the two high-end phones was the fact that the DROID RAZR came loaded with Verizon and Motorola bloatware while the GALAXY Nexus is a pure Google experience.

But what if you could hide or even remove some of the pre-installed applications? There is a way. Holding on to an application inside the app tray will bring up some options including giving you the choice to hide the icon. It won't remove the app from the phone, but at least you will be able to replace the icon with your own choice on the app tray. If you ever need to find one of those hidden apps, simply press the menu button and click on "Hidden Apps" at the top right of the menu.

Some pre-installed apps can not only be hidden, but also removed such as Let's Golf 2, Madden 12 and a few others. To remove those apps, long press on them like you do to hide the icons on the other apps.

Win a Motorola DROID RAZR from Verizon and PhoneArena

We obtained a very special object from Verizon - a locked safe, containing a brand new Motorola DROID RAZR. And, as you can imagine, you are the ones who will have to find out what the unlock code is, and tell it to us, so that we can get that RAZR out of there and ship it over to the first of you who's guessed the correct combination. All of this is part of a Verizon campaign, which has the purpose to promote the latest and greatest Android smartphone out of Moto's camp.

But let's stick to the story: the Operative, a secret agent character who has been posting audio messages on the @DroidLanding Twitter channel for a while, has sent us one of four safes, containing a Motorola DROID RAZR.

Motorola DROID RAZR promo video excites just days ahead of its release

A retail promotional video for the Motorola DROID RAZR has been released that shows off all the things we already know about the highly anticipated device and gets us all even more excited for its upcoming release on 11/11/11.

The promotional video is a nice reminder that the DROID RAZR is perhaps everything we could ask for in a device, save for a serving of Ice Cream Sandwich that will not be included at the time of its launch. With its 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED Advanced display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor and an 8 megapixel camera that can record video in full 1080p HD this handset oozes high-end. However, when it comes to the RAZR moniker, it is the body of the device that impresses the most.

It is the thinnest smartphone around, which is an amazing feat when you factor in its inclusion of the 4G LTE radio. Other devices such as the HTC Thunderbolt or the Motorola DROID Bionic weren’t quite as svelte, to say the least. The DROID RAZR is made of nothing but premium materials. Its steel frame is matched with a Kevlar back plate and a splash guard coating on the gorilla glass screen. Top it off with some aluminum accents and what you have is one attractive, top of the line device. It’s set to release this Friday, 11/11/11 at 11:11 a.m. Take a peek at the promotional video because it is a great refresher to all that the DROID RAZR has to offer.

The New MOTOROLA RAZR - Retail Promo:

RIM's BBX SuperPhones look more like the PlayBook than traditional BlackBerry models

The worst possible news that fans of RIM would want to hear, which is that the new BBX flavored SuperPhones might be delayed thanks to the certification process each new phone must go through with the carriers. Meanwhile, RIM's vice president of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development, Alex Saunders, revealed some more information about the new BBX platform and the first phones to be running the OS. According to Saunders, RIM will concentrate on socially-connected apps and games for the new OS.

As far as looks go, Saunders says that the new BBX models will have more in common with the BlackBerry PlayBook than the traditional QWERTY packin' BlackBerry handset. As on the PlayBook tablet, the screens on the BBX phones will have the same 16:9 aspect ratio and 1024 x 600 resolution. The displays will be all touchscreen and despite the lack of a physical QWERTY keyboard, they are expected to have all the necessary pro-business features to please the enterprise users that have been the heart and soul of the brand. The executive also added that RIM will offer more form factors for future BBX models, possibly some using the more well-known BlackBerry design.

Even though the new phones have been compared to the PlayBook, the latter does not natively support BIS, BBM or BES for RIM's email. An update is expected for the tablet in February which will also give the tablet the ability to run Android apps. Saunders promised that the BBX phones will support everything the tablet does when the handsets are launched. And since the executive promises that the phone will support native email and BIS when rolled out, it makes sense not to expect this to occur before February.

There is also some speculation that RIM is trying to attract the attention of some Nokia developers who were shut out when the Finnish manufacturer switched to its all Windows all the time business plan. Nokia used the Qt development framework for Symbian and MeeGo apps and RIM has built Qt into its PlayBook SDK.

The first new BBX smartphone is expected to be the BlackBerry Colt and late last month, we showed you a rendering of the device along with the specs that are alleged to be on the model.

The Galaxy S II arrives pretty in pink for South Korea, Samsung's baseball team gets a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Lions edition

The Samsung Galaxy S II was one of the best Android flagships this year, proven by its record sales figures for Samsung, but the black plastic shell is nothing to phone home about. Granted, we have a white version, too, but nothing in between. Well, the company is righting this wrong by issuing a pink version. It looks pretty nice, and somehow not overly girly, although that is the obvious target market.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Pink Edition is going on sale in South Korea only for now, but we hope this one and more colored versions can make their way outside the Korean Peninsula, and into our trembling hands, it's a good way to keep the interest in the handset high. The company will also make 150 units of a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Lions Edition, to commemorate the title of its baseball team the Samsung Lions, in the Korean series.

Samsung Epic 4G finally getting its taste of Gingerbread

The Samsung Epic 4G, a popular variation of the original Samsung Galaxy S, is finally getting its serving of Android Gingerbread as Sprint has posted the update on the smartphone’s software update site.

The Samsung Epic 4G was slated to become an EOL (end of life) device at the end of October. It has already had a shelf life of 15 months which is a long time nowadays. While the new update won’t add any more cores to the processor or add the term Plus to the end of its Super AMOLED display, it will most certainly help make the Epic 4G feel new again in a time when a new flagship Android device is seemingly announced once a week.

The Epic 4G was and still is a solid device. Its 4-inch display is still a beauty to behold and its snappy 1GHz Hummingbird processor is a delight. It was only the second device on Sprint to run on the 4G WiMax network, launching just two months after the HTC EVO 4G. It is also the only variant of the Samsung Galaxy S to have a full sliding QWERTY keyboard, a feature that attracted many. The software update will bring some nice functionality to what is still a very good smartphone. Here is the list of improvements you can expect on your Epic 4G, according to Sprint:
Upgrade of the Google OS from Froyo to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)
Audible Sprint AIRAVE notifications when answering call
SMS messages sent without area code
PRL and Profile update
EAS (Exchange Activesync) email displaying HTML
Bluetooth headset sound improvements
Fully visible date on device lock screen

Gingerbread is available now so if the Samsung Epic 4G is still your smartphone of choice then download the update and tell us what you think about it.

Samsung Epic 4G preview:

The state of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates

The state of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is a big update to Android for handsets. So big, that it's got some phone makers hesitant whether they'd even update their devices to the new version. First, it was LG which dropped the bomb on Facebook by saying it's not going to update its LG Optimus 2X flagship. The company quickly changed its position and is "currently in the process of planning the ICS OS update for the LG Optimus 2X as well as other LG high-end smartphones," according to a note which also appeared on the social network.

But it's not just LG – pretty much every other major phone maker has been vague about updating its handsets to ICS. HTC, which was recently ranked as the number one smartphone vendor in the States, judging by smartphone shipments, said it "has been looking closely at the new OS's features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans." The Taiwanese are likely to update their high-end handsets, but when it comes to exact models the company says it needs more time: "Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible and we'll be sharing details on specific devices and timing in the coming weeks!"

Samsung, which has gathered some negative PR after some of last year's Galaxy S models took a long while to get bumped up to new Android versions, has now said that its top-tier smartphones will get Android 4.0. The list includes all 9xxx models, so that means that last year's Samsung Galaxy S in all of its flavors should also be bumped up to the new Android.

Motorola, which is now closer to Google than any other phone manufacturer, seems to be the only company which has given us exact time frames. Moto has pledged to deliver ICS updates six weeks after Google pushes the public release.

Sony Ericsson has also given us a vague promise that it will bring ICS to its devices, but there it seems that the situation will depend a lot on Sony, which is taking over the company in the near future.

With so much uncertainty, we've decided to post a table of everything we know about Android Ice Cream Sandwich updates on various handsets and tablets. We'll update it as soon as we hear about a particular devices getting the update or being denied, so make sure to bookmark it and check back every once in a while. Below, you'll find what we know so far. But now it's back to you, do you care about your device receiving ICS? Would the ambiguity of ICS updates only boost Android fragmentation? Chime in with your opinions on the issue in the comments below.

Android's market share of app downloads in Q2 reaches 44% surpassing the 31% share of iOS

Android's market share of app downloads in Q2 reaches 44% surpassing the 31% share of iOS
According to ABI Research, the Android Market is busier these days than the App Store. During the second quarter-the latest time period for which data is available-Android devices accounted for 44% of all app downloads surpassing the 31% market share belonging to iOS flavored devices. Research associate Lim Shiyang credits the open source nature of Android for these results, saying that the free nature of the OS draws more users to devices powered by Android and supports the growth of third party and multi-platform application stores. That, in turn, allows Android to capture the top spot for app downloads.

Additionally, ABI points to a slowdown in the growth of Apple iPhone shipments as another reason for Android's leading market share when it comes to installing apps. During this year's second quarter, growth in shipments of the Apple iPhone slowed to 9% from 15% in the year's first quarter while Android growth reached 36% in Q2, up from the 20% improvement it scored in the first quarter. The installed base of Android users leads those using iOS by 2.4 to 1. According to ABI, this will increase to 3 to 1 by 2016.

It isn't all bad news for the gang at Cupertino. Dan Shey, practice director, mobile services for ABI noters that while Android leads in total mobile app downloads, Apple still has the most app downloads per user. Shy points out that, "Apple’s superior monetization policies attracted good developers within its ranks, thus creating a better catalog of apps and customer experience.”

App downloads are expected to total 29 billion for this year compared with 9 billion downloaded in 2010. The main reason for the surge in app downloads according to ABI, is the huge increase in smartphone usage world-wide. For example, the number of smartphone users globally is expected to grow 46% this year.

GameStop testing sales of Android tablets in 200 stores

GameStop testing sales of Android tablets in 200 stores
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that during this holiday season, retailer GameStop will put specialized Android tablets in 200 stores to see how well they sell. The tablets, made by Asus, Acer and Samsung, will each come with seven free games including EA's "Dead Space", and will be offered at the same price you would see at other stores. Although the tablets will support GameStop's new controller out of the box, it must be purchased separately at the store.

Last month, we reported that GameStop was planning on offering its own Android tablets to sell in its stores. Besides offering pre-installed games, console quality content would be streamed from the cloud using the controller. The idea behind adding the tablets in its stores is to sell more gaming devices to complement the individual games that it sells.

Android Market soon to offer millions of tunes

Android Market soon to offer millions of tunes
The soon to open Google Music Store might be one of the worst kept secrets in the industry. A couple of weeks ago, the New York Times said that Google's answer to iTunes was close to launching and Andy Rubin mentioned that the opening of the service would be coming shortly at last week's AsiaD conference in Hong Kong.

Another sign that the Google Music Store is close to opening

A huge sign that the Google Music Store is about to open reveals itself when you go to the Google Music landing page at music.google.com. From your phone, you are presented with a link (which currently is not in operation) to the Android Market where you can, "Get songs from your favorite artists in Android Market, including hundreds of free tracks." The link, when it is up and running, is set up to take you to https://market.android.com/music.

The link on the top of the page that says "Get Android App" sends you to the Google Music Beta app which offers a limited free trial, but does not allow you to purchase tunes from the Android Market. Longer than expected negotiations with the record labels is holding this feature back. The app allows you to store up to 20,000 songs for free and lets you access them from any Android device running Froyo or higher. You will also be able to create your own playlist and listen to your songs even when offline.

Right now, it is available only in the U.S. and it requires Flash to be installed. If you want to start your music collection now, some free tunes are available from the service. Add all of this functionality to a brand new Google Music Store, and it looks like iTunes will have some tough competition.

Your HTC Android phone can haz 5GB of Dropbox storage for free now

Your HTC Android phone can haz 5GB of Dropbox storage for free now
HTC just made the morning for many of its fans. You don't need to go to the cloud, the cloud can come to you, is HTC's logic for partnering with Dropbox, and they have good reasoning. Why spend on R&D, when there are numerous great cloud storage services out there you can just team up with?

The Taiwanese announced via Twitter that they will be pairing 5GB of free storage with each HTC Android device, which is a more generous offer than the usual 2GB Dropbox gives to the freeriding subscribers, and equals HTC with storage offerings like iCloud, for example. The HTC Windows Phones don't need this for obvious reasons, since they already come with the 25GB free storage of SkyDrive.

The smartphone and tablet maker already has the other cloud services covered via HTCSense.com and its video service HTC Watch, so now with the Dropbox partnership it adds storage as well, rounding up a complete cloud setup.

The Dropbox offer is for all HTC Android phones, young and old alike, the only thing you have to do is download the app from Android Market and enjoy the freebie.
