New iPhone App Improves Eyesight

There is a new iPhone app coming out that could actually reduce the amount of time that you need to wear glasses or contact lenses. This new app is called GlassesOff and it is being developed by Ucansi and is expected to be released in the next couple of weeks. The GlassesOff app has been found to improve eyesight in people of 50 to that of a 40 years old and this was after just 40 sessions of using the app. Sounds pretty great doesn’t it? Studies have also shown that this app can help people to read sentences more quickly.

When you purchase this app and use it you will get a grey screen with a white circle and then images at random places on the screen. These images can be blank or have blurred lines or patterns on them and what you have to do is pick out the specific gabor patches that pop up where the white circle is. What happens is that eye muscle gets a workout which helps to keep the eye young and healthy.

If this sounds like something you would like to try out then be warned, it is going to retail at £60 for three months when it hits the app stores. Seems pretty pricey but if it really does do what it says it will work out cheaper than laser eye surgery. It is going to be available in the App Store later this year and if it does well I’m sure we will see some other developers producing similar apps that will be available in the Cydia store.

Apple Store iPhone App Now Includes Self Checkout and In Store Pickup

Apple has updated their Apple Store iPhone app to include the self-checkout feature that will allow people to buy things in Apple’s retail stores without having to get a clerk to take their payment. This newly updated app will allow users to choose the things they want to purchase from the shelves in Apple’s retail stores and then scan the barcode using their iPhone’s camera. The item will then be charged to their iTunes account the same way as apps, music and other online content currently is. The updated app also expands Apple’s personal pickup option to all US retail stores. Here is exactly what you can expect with the new version of this app.

Personal Pickup:
Buy in the app and choose to pick up your order at any Apple Retail Store. Most in-stock orders are available for pickup within an hour. (U.S. only)

EasyPay:
Purchase select accessories in store quickly by scanning the barcode and completing your transaction right in the app. (U.S. only, requires iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S)

Track your stuff:
View the status of current and previous orders from the order status section in the More tab.

What this newly updated app means is that there will be no need for human interaction during the process and all you have to do is scan your item and leave the store. It is not yet clear whether there will be some kind of security check in order to minimize the risk of theft. The self-checkout system will be available for anything that is currently available on the shelves in any Apple store but larger more valuable items will still require you to get the assistance of a member of staff to process the order.

Apple has also started to roll out a system that will allow people to buy items online and then collect them in-store. This will again reduce the amount of time required for processing purchases in these busy Apple stores. This is sure to be a huge success over the Christmas period which is always extremely busy. To download the new Apple Store App 2.0 just visit your iTunes store.

AT&T Activates One Million iPhone 4S Handsets

US mobile carrier AT&T has just announced that they have now activated more than one million iPhone 4S handsets since the iPhone 4S went on sale last Friday to Tuesday this week, and we also heard from Apple recently that they had sold more than 4 million iPhone 4S devices in the first three days.

“It’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for the iPhone 4S and they want it to run on a network that lets them download twice as fast as competitors’,” said Ralph de la Vega, President and CEO, AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets. It will be interesting to see what sort of numbers both Verizon and Sprint post for the iPhone 4S, and whether either company has activated as many devices as AT&T.

iPhone 4S Parts Cost Estimated At $188

Apple’s iPhone 4S went on sale last week, and Apple announced that they had sold over four million iPhone 4S units in the first three days, and now details have been revealed on how much the iPhone 4S costs to manufacturer, which would mean that Apple are making a healthy profit for each iPhone 4S sold.

According to Andrew Rassweiler, of IHS iSupply, who performed a teardown on the iPhone 4S, the 16GB model costs Apple around $188 to manufacture, the 32GB around $207 and the 64GB model around $245. Considering that the carrier free version of the iPhone 4S, which Apple will sell next month costs $649 for the 16GB version, $749 for the 32GB version and $849 for the 64GB version Apple is making a healthy profit on each one they sell.

AT&T third quarter profits miss Street estimates, iPhone activations slowing down

AT&T third quarter profits miss Street estimates, iPhone activations slowing down
AT&T has just reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2011 and this time profits were down as iPhone activations slowed down ahead of a new iPhone launch in Q4. Users’ expectations for the new, now available iPhone 4S, seem to be a big reason of the revenue decline. The quarterly results also missed Wall Street analysts expectations instantly pushing the carrier’s shares down 2.5%.

The second-largest US carrier added 319,000 postpaid subscribers in the third trimester, pushing the overall subscriber count over 100 million and getting closer to Verizon’s total subscription. It’s still less than the projected average of around 406,000 quarterly additions.

What worries investors the most is the slow growth in average revenue per user (ARPU). The carrier reported ARPU of $63.69, falling short of the analysts’ average.

On the positive side, though, now, more than a half or 52.6% of AT&T’s customers use a smartphone. AT&T’s wireless profit margin was also rock solid at 43.7%, exceeding the previously estimated 41.7%.

The iPhone remained the single biggest selling handset on AT&T, but Android sales were the ones to register the biggest growth, doubling from last quarter. Altogether smartphone sales at the carrier stood at 4.8 million for the trimester.

Griffin Technology Unveils Woogie 2 for iPhone

This was a little stuffed star plush toy that had a pouch on the front you could place your iPhone into. The idea was that the padded Woogie device would allow your kids to play with your iPhone without you worrying they would drop it.

Griffin is back with a new Woogie 2 that is a follow up to the last version. The new Woogie 2 has the same idea in that you can put the iPhone into the pouch and it will be protected from drops and bumps. The Woogie 2 comes in pink or blue colors. The main difference between the original Woogie and the Woogie 2 is the design. The original Woogie was a star and the new Woogie 2 has an octopus shape with five legs. The legs can lay flat or the round section that has the iPhone pouch can be propped up on the legs.
