Swipe for mail allows users to swipe left or right to see their next or previous emails in the Mail app. This is another app made available for jailbroken iDevices. According to Cydia, Swipe for Mail adds the ability to swipe left or right in Mail.app to retrieve the previous or next email. No icons are added to your home screen or settings and there are no options to configure either.

We tested the Swipe for Mail tweak on a jailbroken iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 and we can confirm that it works just as advertised. It might be a small tweak but we feel that it is a very useful tweak which makes reading email a more pleasant experience and it saves you plenty of time. If you are one of the few who prefer tapping their screen this might not be the tweak for you as it involves swiping. It is however a great simple tweak that you can add to your jailbroken iPhone or iDevice that uses the Mail.app.

You will of course need to have a jailbroken device to install this tweak and if you need help jailbreaking the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 you can use Absinthe. Qualcomm Adds Support for GPS and GLONASS to Some Chips

Qualcomm has announced that it has added support for both the US GPS satellites and Russian GLONASS satellites to its Snapdragon S2 and S3 processor platforms. The addition of GLONASS support means that the phones in the US can access the Russian system as well as the domestic system.

The benefit of that is that the GPS lock will be faster and positional data will be more accurate thanks to two sets of satellites. The Samsung Galaxy S II on T-Mobile already has a chip with that capability. The increased accuracy will allow the user to locate themselves within 2 meters.

The fix will also be stronger when under cover like trees and the location services will be more reliable. The Snapdragon processors will know when to turn on GLONASS and when it’s not needed to save battery life on the smartphone.

T-Mobile Vivacity makes a UK landing: affordable 3.5-inch Android hiding ZTE origins

The T-Mobile Vivacity hit the UK carrier’s website a couple of days ago and even back then we could tell that it was going to be in the affordable Android business. Today, the Vivacity hits T-Mobile UK shelves exclusively and packs quite a punch for the zero on-contract price. It appears that the T-Mobile Vivacity is ZTE-made, but it only carries the carrier brand. It has a 3.5-inch WVGA display and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Overall, it covers all the basics and a bit more with 3G and Wi-Fi support, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing one, and finally with extendible memory via microSD cards of up to 32GB.

It retails for around $150 off contract, which places it comfortably right in the Android low-end segment. At such a low price point, the 3.5-inch screen is definitely a huge bonus and something that might turn some eyes. Currently, the device is only selling in the UK, but we’ll update you as soon as we find out more about its possible US arrival.

Siri Running On The iPhone 3GS

We have already seen a video of Siri working on the iPhone 4, and now it has been ported to the older iPhone 3GS, the port was done by Steve Troughton-Smith, the guy who brought us the original iPhone 4 port and Grant Paul. As you will see in the video below, the ported Siri on the iPhone 3GS is working and communicating with Apple’s servers, which means that Apple could also possibly bring Siri to the iPhone 3GS.

We heard that Apple are working internally with Siri on the iPhone 4, although there was no indication that they were testing it out on the 3GS, so if they do release an official version of Siri for the iPhone 4 at least we know it is possible on the iPhone 3GS as well, although whether Apple would bring it to the 3GS remains to be seen.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will go on sale in the UK and Europe on the 17th of November, and we are expecting it to launch in the US with Verizon wireless at around the same time, but it could possibly be coming on the 28th of November.

The guys over at Droid Life have obtained an advertising schedule for Verizon and it shows that they will be pushing the Droid Razr first from the 10th to 14th of November and then the Samsung Galaxy nexus from the 28th of November.

Of course this doesn’t mean that the Samsung Galaxy nexus wont go on sale before the 28th in the US, it could still launch around the 17th of November, and the roadmap could just mean that Verizon will offer some sort of promotions for the 28th.

iPhone 4S Poor Battery Caused By iOS5 Location Services Bug?

It’s been discovered that a bug within Apple’s iOS 5 software could be responsible for the poor battery life that some users are experiencing on their iPhone 4S smartphones. The bug is thought to be in the Location Services of iOS 5 which causes the iPhone to poll the mobile mast data more frequently than necessary which then causes the battery life of the iPhone to drop. The issue seems to occur when the “Setting Time Zone” element of the Systems Services within the broader Location Services product is running even when there is no chance that the user would have moved to a different location or time zone.

There is also an icon beside the setting which indicates whether it has been used in the past 24 hours and suggests that the service could be running repeatedly to position the phone even when there is no need to do so.

On iDownloadBlog, Oliver Haslam reports:
“it appears that iOS 5′s GM release introduced a bug that causes the Setting Time Zone function to keep the location tracking circuitry running constantly, draining battery power considerably. Switching it off may mean that your iPhone will no longer set its own time zone when you travel, but that’s a small price to pay for having your iPhone last more than 12 hours on a full charge… We have tested this method on 4 different iPhone 4s handsets, including an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS. All have reported drastically improved battery life after switching ‘Setting Time Zone’ off.”

Unfortunately there are no results at the moment from the ongoing tests which conclude disabling the setting it will stop your battery from depleting. But as soon as any more information comes to light will let you know. However if you are suffering from battery degradation on your iPhone 4S then you can give it a go by accessing the feature in Settings -> Location Services -> scroll to bottom to “System Services” -> Setting Time Zone.

ARM Unveils Cortex A7 MPCore Mobile Processor

ARM has added another mobile processor to its range, which is designed to be used in smartphones and tablets, the ARM Cortex A7 MPCore, which according to ARM is their most power efficient mobile processor to date. The ARM Cortex A7 MPCore is a single core chip which is designed to be used in budget friendly tablets and smartphones, and it is around one fifth of the size of ARM Cortex A8 processor, and it is 5 time more energy efficient that the A8.

By developing big.LITTLE processing and the Cortex-A7 processor, ARM has addressed the challenge for technology that can deliver both high-performance, required for content creation and consumption, while also delivering extreme power efficiency for extended battery life. This is particularly pertinent as smartphones and tablets continue to evolve into the primary platforms that consumers use to interact with our increasingly connected world. ARM has said that the first smartphones and devices that will use the new Cortex A7 MPCore processor should be out in 2013.

Griffin Technology Unveils Woogie 2 for iPhone

This was a little stuffed star plush toy that had a pouch on the front you could place your iPhone into. The idea was that the padded Woogie device would allow your kids to play with your iPhone without you worrying they would drop it.

Griffin is back with a new Woogie 2 that is a follow up to the last version. The new Woogie 2 has the same idea in that you can put the iPhone into the pouch and it will be protected from drops and bumps. The Woogie 2 comes in pink or blue colors. The main difference between the original Woogie and the Woogie 2 is the design. The original Woogie was a star and the new Woogie 2 has an octopus shape with five legs. The legs can lay flat or the round section that has the iPhone pouch can be propped up on the legs.

Apple Creating Airport Utility App For iOS

Its been discovered in the recent release of iOS5 Gold Master that Apple is currently working on creating a new Airport Utility App For iOS. Apple has stated that one of its goals in developing iOS 5 is to make iOS devices “PC free,”. The new discovery would follow those lines allowing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners running iOS 5 to set up their AirPort stations without needing to use a computer.

The Apple Insider website explains:
“Under Wi-Fi Networks, a new option reads “Set up an AirPort Base Station…” In setting up a Time Capsule, users are given the option to create a Wi-Fi network, complete with password, or “Do something different.” Selecting the latter option gives users the option to join an existing network, or to replace a base station. Users are also given appropriate error messages or details on how to fix any issues directly from the iOS Settings application.”

Most people will go for the contract not because its cheap but because either they don’t have $499 to spend on a phone or are not willing to pay that much at a go. The phone is great, Dual core has arrived, it has an HDMI port at the top of the phone. So enticing.

T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G now on Sale

The new T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G cell phone is now on sale for $259.99 with 2-Year contract. As for the Amaze it’s a bulkier, heavier version of the Sensation with more Ram and internal memory (And a few more camera specs). The Galaxy S II headed to T-Mobile is coming up next, it is a great phone too and build quality is much better than the original S but they’ve kept that lightweight and almost cheap feeling, but it doesn’t feel cheap by any means. I’m really looking forward to this phone. And while I’ve been very happy with the performance, the aesthetics and build quality are lacking. I’m excited to get a sexier, better built, and heavier phone in my paws.

Everything Everywhere announces shared 3G with Orange and T-Mobile

The "big switch-on" from Everything Everywhere is continuing for UK customers. Everything Everywhere is the parent company of both Orange and T-Mobile, and is also the largest communications company in the UK. The company had begun the "big switch-on" last year by allowing Orange and T-Mobile customers to use each other's 2G networks, and now has announced that sharing will extend to 3G networks as well.

The roll-out will begin next week and continue for a few months. Eventually, all 27 million Orange and T-Mobile customers in the UK will be able to use each other's 3G networks to make roaming easier, better covered, and less expensive.

The Samsung Galaxy Y professional doesn’t shine with any unorthodox style selections, it’s simply a portrait QWERTY candybar. Stylish new Phone HTC Rhyme

HTC might not be officially saying it, but the Taiwanese company has just announced the release of an Android phone that is clearly marketed at women, or more specifically, teenage girls. The HTC Rhyme is a compact, purple Android phone with a 3.7in touchscreen, mid-range specifications and an optional accessory that most will cringe at: a "charm" that glows when you receive a call or text message.

The most prominent specifications include: 1GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, and a Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset, 768 MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and HTC Sense UI 3.5.

The design of the HTC Rhyme is a candy-bar style without a QWERTY keyboard. The touch-screen display is 3.7 inches large and has a 252 pixel per inch density (quite impressive)! The color is a somewhat off-purple metallic color. Additionally, there are four touch buttons at the bottom of the display, which is common with many Android smartphones.

Overall, the HTC Rhyme looks to have many common features you would expect to find in a new Android device, but it does not really have anything special over the current phones out there. This would be a great cell phone to get in a one or two year contract as you can probably save some money on the price. The HTC Rhyme release date is expected to some time in October.
