Swipe For Mail – The New Way to View Your Email

Swipe for mail allows users to swipe left or right to see their next or previous emails in the Mail app. This is another app made available for jailbroken iDevices. According to Cydia, Swipe for Mail adds the ability to swipe left or right in Mail.app to retrieve the previous or next email. No icons are added to your home screen or settings and there are no options to configure either.

We tested the Swipe for Mail tweak on a jailbroken iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 and we can confirm that it works just as advertised. It might be a small tweak but we feel that it is a very useful tweak which makes reading email a more pleasant experience and it saves you plenty of time. If you are one of the few who prefer tapping their screen this might not be the tweak for you as it involves swiping. It is however a great simple tweak that you can add to your jailbroken iPhone or iDevice that uses the Mail.app.

You will of course need to have a jailbroken device to install this tweak and if you need help jailbreaking the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 you can use Absinthe. If you have the iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1 and iPod Touch you can use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze. Swipe for Mail can be downloaded for free from Cydia under ModMyi repo which is included by default.

Sony Xperia S Now Available From Three UK

Three is the first carrier to offer the shiny new Sony Xperia S in the UK. The sexy device is available both to Pay as you go and Pay monthly users, with contract signing being required for the latter group.

Don’t like long customer agreements? You’ll have to pour out 369.99 GBP (about $580) and then grab the tariff that works best for you with any operator you like. Three suggest two options: All in one 15, which costs 15 GBP and offers 300 any-network minutes, 3,000 texts and unlimited data for the first 30 days; and All in One 25, that gives you 500 minutes, 3,000 texts and the same all-you-can-eat data for one month.

If you, however, want to get the phone free of charge, you’ll have to commit on a two-year contract costing at least 30 GBP a month. Even better (Three thinks so), go for the 36 GBP/month tariff with unlimited data.

ProTube HD Lets You Experience YouTube As It Should Be On Your iPad

A few weeks ago the reinvention of the YouTube application for the iPhone was made public as it was imagined by developer Jonas Gessner. This is available to all those who have a jailbroken iPhone and is available through the Cydia store. This new app has a number of features and additions that many feel should have been native in Apple's stock implementation of YouTube. ProTube has been a huge success for jailbroken devices and following on from this Gessner has released a HD version of the app for the iPad.

If you are not familiar with the ProTube app then all you need to know is that it is a complete reinvention of the YouTube application which combines a professional look with a powerful feature set.

ProTube HD is not just another tweak, it is a full self sufficient application and when you launch it ProTube presents the standard mobile version of the YouTube website with some really powerful features. By taking advantage of the mobile version of YouTube and then coupling this with the iPad screen and the recognized interface controls, ProTube HD represents what many people are saying is a superior alternative to the native experience. This application has some great features including all of the expected YouTube activities such as commenting, sharing and rating videos, you gain control over your user account, you get high and standard definition video downloads and the option to save only the sound track of a video in high quality MP3 format. There are plenty more features built in and you can view the full list in the Cydia store. ProTube HD is a bargain price at just $1.49 and it is available now through the Big Boss repository. It is compatible with iOS 4 and above.

An Alternative To Cydia Called The iTweak Store

Jailbreaking is now even more popular than ever and today we want to tell you about a web based alternative to Cydia called the iTweak Store. For the last number of years, Cydia has been the cream of the crop when it comes to jailbreak device apps, themes and more. The Cydia icon has become the visual indication that a device has been jailbroken with all jailbreak tools installing Cydia as part of the process. Are you ready for some competition?

Whenever a developer wants to package a tweak for sale or download the only real option that they have is to make it available via the Cydia store. There are some alternatives like hosting the file themselves but because Cydia has such a large following it doesn't make sense to do this. So there really isn't any competition to Cydia. This could all be about to change though thanks to a new service called iTweak. This is a web site that is offering tweaks and applications for jailbroken devices.

Itweak is a web based service and it looks likely that users will be able to download any hosted packages directly to their device. This will allow them to take advantage of the usual things we have come to expect like unique user logins and account management facilities. The iTweak service is being developed by @roktheworld27 and @mtamermahoney and the small piece of information that is available on the home page says that iTweak is one of the best places to get all your tweaks, themes, utilities and more on your jailbroken iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The home page also states that they serve as an alternative to Cydia and the Apple App Store.

The iTweak home page looks and feels like a native application and users can navigate directly to the new and updated packages as well as the usual things like terms or service. There isn't really that much information available about payment methods as yet but we assume that paypal will be available. The iTweak service sounds like a great idea but the problem that they are going to have initially is convincing developers to list their packages on an unknown and untested service when they could be hosting them on Cydia which is well established. Add to that the fact that various web services have popped up in the past which have failed and it will take a lot of convincing.

MWC app updated for 2012 just before the show

The Mobile World Congress taking place on Sunday this week. The event is expected to bring some of the best devices for 2012 - the first quad-core smartphones, the first phones based on 28nm architectures like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4, and much more.

We already know that there will be a lot of new devices - some of them have leaked out, others we’ve heard rumors about, and one app that will help keep track of all the novelties and help you not get lost (if you’re in Barna, as the locals call it) is the GSMA App. GSMA is the association organizing the event.

The GSMA App is a portal for the show’s agenda, with names of exhibitors, search and huge video section for live streaming of events. It also has a map showing what’s where and if you’ve been to a show this big you’d appreciate it. Hit the Android link below, it’s free, so it wouldn’t hurt checking it out. Don't forget to also take a peek at the schedule of MWC's most important events here.

Amazon might launch a 9-inch Kindle Fire tablet in mid-2012, new 7-inch model coming too

What is more interesting is that Bartley is expecting “new 7- and 9-inch models” of the Amazon Kindle Fire to launch in “mid-2012”. As in a successor to the existing 7-inch slate and a bigger counterpart with a 9-inch display.

Actually, this isn't the first time when we hear rumors regarding a larger Kindle Fire. Before the launch of the 7-inch slate, a 10.1-inch model was said to be on its way as well, but perhaps Amazon decided to stay out of that end of the market for the time being. A 8.9-inch Kindle Fire has also been speculated about more than once, with sources claiming that orders for its components have already been placed.

Of course, we can only guess how the alleged 9-inch Kindle Fire will be marketed and what kind of hardware it will boast, if it ever sees the light of day, that is. On the other hand, we probably won't be wrong if we say that it will try to steal some of the upcoming iPad 3's cool. As far as the supposed 7-inch Kindle Fire successor is concerned, a few hardware and software tweaks combined with a tempting price tag might make a recipe for success.

iPhone Locator System BiKN Debuts

If you are the sort that needs a bit of help keeping up with your things like briefcases and more the BiKN for iPhone tracking system might be for you. The case the system uses goes on the iPhone and can connect to small tracking tags that can be put on just about anything.

The tags are able to communicate location to the case even if the iPhone is off or in sleep mode. Other than tracking things like bags and such, the system can also be used to track people like kids or even pets. The app that runs the system can support up to eight tags.

That means you can track all sorts of stuff at once. The only downside is that the tags need to be charged every now and then so you can’t just slip one on a backpack for your kid and leave it. The app allows the user to find, leach, or page the user. Pricing for the kit is unknown and it will launch in December.

SD Association devising a standard to include NFC chips in future microSD cards

The SD Association, which is a standardization body for the SD memory cards, is planning to devise a standard to insert NFC chips in the next generation of SD and microSD cards. Technically this is already been done by companies like Netcom, but having a standard means future products will be uniform and play well with others. The development of such smart-chip technology to be inserted into SD cards will be done in partnership with GlobalPlatform, which standardizes secure application management.

Now that would be an interesting development, since the billions of handsets without NFC connectivity will be graced with the dubious capabilities to spend your money even easier, just by tapping at the checkout counter. We kid, NFC is useful for many reasons other than the Google Wallets of this world, such as serving like an access card for residential buildings or offices, jumping on the subway train, and snatching info off movie posters or landmark labels.

Verizon to add LTE service to two more cities over the next two months

Verizon announced on Thursday that it will be expanding its LTE 4G service to Roanoke, Virginia on November 17th. Communities that will be serviced by Verizon's 4G pipeline will include downtown Roanoke, Smith Mountain Lake, Christiansburg, Radford City, Buena Vista City, Lexington City and Rockbridge. Virginia Tech will also be covered. After the switch is turned on in Roanoke, Verizon will have 178 cities blanketed by LTE, and 15 devices supporting the service. Some of the phones that run at LTE speed include the Motorola DROID RAZR, the Motorola DROID BIONIC (remember that phone, guys?), and the upcoming HTC Rezound.

On December 15th, Verizon's LTE service gets turned on in city number 179, Indiana, Pennsylvania. The list of surrounding areas that will have the service include White Township, the Indiana University of PA campus, Homer City and Blairsville.

Verizon's LTE service should provide speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps on the downlink and 2 to 5Mbps on the uplink and is as much as 10 times faster than 3G service. We are coming up on the one-year anniversary of Big Red's initial LTE launch on December 5th and the carrier has given itself a nice head start on other carriers rolling out LTE service including AT&T and MetroPCS.

Nokia N8 might be getting a sequel in 2012 running Symbian still, but this time with optical zoom

The Nokia N8 is in the works, and is about to land in Q2 2012. This seems primed to be announced at MWC 2012 in Barcelona, since CES 2012 might be stealing the spotlight on the Nokia Windows Phones side. The new camera-centric Nokia is supposed to have an even better camera than its predecessor, and with optical zoom to boot, which is the main request of the fans that use what is arguably the best camera on a cell phone. Resolution is not specified, although we wouldn't be surprised if that number doesn't change from 12MP, which is already plenty.

We do get some alleged bump in specs, though - the Nokia N8 upgrade is supposed to have a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and sport a 3.5" screen, like the current one, but with 480x800 pixels of resolution. What struck as odd is that it is still supposed to run Symbian, which doesn't support WVGA resolutions yet, but that might have been remedied by then. Moreover, high-resolution screens, multicore processors, and sophisticated camera shenanigans support are not coming to Windows Phone before the Apollo update. These specs seem equal to what the current high-end Symbian Belle handsets, like the Nokia 701 have, so that's what we could have on the Nokia N8 sequel, with an update for higher screen resolution support.

Samsung Epic 4G finally getting its taste of Gingerbread

The Samsung Epic 4G, a popular variation of the original Samsung Galaxy S, is finally getting its serving of Android Gingerbread as Sprint has posted the update on the smartphone’s software update site.

The Samsung Epic 4G was slated to become an EOL (end of life) device at the end of October. It has already had a shelf life of 15 months which is a long time nowadays. While the new update won’t add any more cores to the processor or add the term Plus to the end of its Super AMOLED display, it will most certainly help make the Epic 4G feel new again in a time when a new flagship Android device is seemingly announced once a week.

The Epic 4G was and still is a solid device. Its 4-inch display is still a beauty to behold and its snappy 1GHz Hummingbird processor is a delight. It was only the second device on Sprint to run on the 4G WiMax network, launching just two months after the HTC EVO 4G. It is also the only variant of the Samsung Galaxy S to have a full sliding QWERTY keyboard, a feature that attracted many. The software update will bring some nice functionality to what is still a very good smartphone. Here is the list of improvements you can expect on your Epic 4G, according to Sprint:
Upgrade of the Google OS from Froyo to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)
Audible Sprint AIRAVE notifications when answering call
SMS messages sent without area code
PRL and Profile update
EAS (Exchange Activesync) email displaying HTML
Bluetooth headset sound improvements
Fully visible date on device lock screen

Gingerbread is available now so if the Samsung Epic 4G is still your smartphone of choice then download the update and tell us what you think about it.

Concept Flick of Your Finger.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will go on sale in the UK and Europe on the 17th of November, and we are expecting it to launch in the US with Verizon wireless at around the same time, but it could possibly be coming on the 28th of November.

The guys over at Droid Life have obtained an advertising schedule for Verizon and it shows that they will be pushing the Droid Razr first from the 10th to 14th of November and then the Samsung Galaxy nexus from the 28th of November.

Of course this doesn’t mean that the Samsung Galaxy nexus wont go on sale before the 28th in the US, it could still launch around the 17th of November, and the roadmap could just mean that Verizon will offer some sort of promotions for the 28th.
